Macrophages retain hematopoietic stem cells in the spleen via VCAM-1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Splenic myelopoiesis provides a steady flow of leukocytes to inflamed tissues, and leukocytosis correlates with cardiovascular mortality. Yet regulation of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) activity in the spleen is incompletely understood.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis in the absence of myeloproliferative neoplasm: Mayo Clinic case series of 309 patients

open access: yesBlood Cancer Journal, 2018
Background : Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) implies the production of erythroid and myeloid progenitor cells outside of the bone marrow. EMH in adults is typically seen in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).

Multifocal extramedullary hematopoiesis in a 15-year-old girl with beta thalassemia: A case report

open access: yesRadiology Case Reports, 2022
Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare disorder in which hematopoietic cells proliferate in tissues other than the bone marrow as a result of a range of hematologic illnesses.

Ames hypopituitary dwarf mice demonstrate imbalanced myelopoiesis between bone marrow and spleen [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Ames hypopituitary dwarf mice are deficient in growth hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and prolactin. The phenotype of these mice demonstrates irregularities in the immune system with skewing of the normal cytokine milieu towards a more anti ...

Bayesian inference and model choice in a hidden stochastic two-compartment model of hematopoietic stem cell fate decisions [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Statistics 2009, Vol. 3, No. 4, 1695-1709, 2010
Despite rapid advances in experimental cell biology, the in vivo behavior of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) cannot be directly observed and measured. Previously we modeled feline hematopoiesis using a two-compartment hidden Markov process that had birth and emigration events in the first compartment.

Extramedullary Hematopoiesis: An Unusual Finding in Subdural Hematomas

open access: yesCase Reports in Pathology, 2011
We present a case of a 59-year-old man who was found to have clusters of hyperchromatic, small, round nucleated cells within a subdural hematoma removed after a skull fracture.

The Role of MCPIP1 in Macrophage Polarization and Cardiac Function Post‐Myocardial Infarction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Following myocardial infarction, MCPIP1 deficiency in macrophages triggers ferroptosis, driving proinflammatory M1 dominance over reparative M2 phenotypes. This imbalance amplifies splenic monocyte release and sustains cardiac inflammation. Concurrently, excessive inflammatory mediators and insufficient TGF‐β impair fibroblast activation, delaying ...

Niche-induced extramedullary hematopoiesis in the spleen is regulated by the transcription factor Tlx1

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) in postnatal life is a pathological process in which the differentiation of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) occurs outside the bone marrow (BM) to respond to hematopoietic emergencies.

Comparative pathogenicity of vaccinia virus and mpox virus infections in CAST/EiJ mice: Exploring splenomegaly and transcriptomic profiles

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
We successfully constructed CAST/EiJ mice models infected with low‐dose vaccinia virus (VACV‐L), high‐dose VACV (VACV‐H), and mpox virus (MPXV), demonstrating that VACV‐L and MPXV infections induced splenomegaly in mice, and VACV‐H infection caused mortality in mice.
