On Schopenhauer's Debt to Spinoza1

Abstract Schopenhauer offers ‘nature is not divine but demonic’ as a direct rebuttal of Spinoza's pantheism, his identification of ‘nature’ with ‘God’. And so, one would think, he ought to have been immune to the ‘Spinozism’ that became, as Heine called it, ‘the unofficial religion’ of the age.

The ecclesiastical fight against storm‐makers in the Latin west

This paper studies the strategies used by the Church to fight against the storm‐makers. These figures were said to cause the storms that ruined crops, and during Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages in the Visigothic and Frankish kingdoms were subject to punishment and constraints.

Genetic encoding of noncanonical amino acids (ncAA) enables their site‐specific installation in proteins. This work compares the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) performance of different ncAAs in a large protein−DNA complex (~ 100 kDa) without isotope labelling. The ncAAs deliver readily detectable NMR signals in the complex between E.
