Effects of Recurving Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclones on Downstream Ridges Over Pacific‐Western North America

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Recurving tropical cyclones (TC) in the Western North Pacific can affect the atmospheric circulation over Pacific‐Western North America (PWNA) via interactions with the midlatitude circulation. Using reanalysis and tropical cyclone best‐track data, we examine how recurving TCs that make extratropical transition modulate 500‐hPa ridge ...

Tropical Cyclones Drive Enhanced Inorganic Iodine in the Mid‐Latitude Upper Troposphere

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Halogens deplete tropospheric and stratospheric ozone, but the role of iodine is still elusive. Atmospheric iodine mainly originates from marine inorganic (I2, HOI) and organic (CH3I, CH2I2, CH2IBr, and CH2ICl) emissions. We report on airborne measurements of atmospheric iodine oxide (IO) concentrations up to 15 km altitude from two flights of

Characteristics of precipitation associated with post-tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic

open access: yesWeather and Climate Extremes
Precipitation brought by cyclone systems has long been known as a major contributor to devastating flood events.Recent post-tropical cyclones (PTCs), which transform from tropical cyclones (TC) to extratropical cyclones (ETC) in the mid-latitudes, are ...

Weather Regimes Preclude the Observation of a Southern Annular Mode Signal in Two Coastal East Antarctic Ice Cores

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) represents the dominant pattern of climate variability in the extratropical Southern Hemisphere. However, its signature in coastal East Antarctic ice core records is unclear. A daily synoptic typing data set for the southern Indian Ocean constructed using self‐organizing maps on 500 hPa daily geopotential height

Linking Salinity and Precipitation Through Moisture Transport: A Study for the North Atlantic

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Sea surface salinity (SSS) is a key indicator of the ocean–atmosphere freshwater balance and plays a central role in global moisture transport. This study investigates how extreme SSS anomalies in the North Atlantic (NATL) source region indicate atmospheric moisture pathways and precipitation in surrounding continental and island sink regions.

Analysis of Radar Characteristics and Evolution Mechanisms of Supercells Inducing Three Strong Tornado Events Under Extratropical Cyclone Background

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
On the afternoon of 5 July 2024, under the influence of an extratropical cyclone, a rare triple‐tornado event struck Heze City, Shandong Province, comprising the Dongming tornado (EF3), the Juancheng tornado (EF2), and the Yuncheng tornado (EF3).

Can ERA5 Be Used to Study Mesoscale Convective System Climatological Characteristics?

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) produce more than half of tropical rainfall and are central to the global hydrologic cycle. As the climate warms, environments favorable for MCSs may become more common; however, limited observational records hamper understanding of how MCSs respond to variations and changes in their environments.

Cross‐Seasonal Impacts of the Atlantic Niño on Arctic Winter Surface Air Temperature

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract The Arctic has warmed at more than twice the global mean rate, with winter anomalies over the Barents‐Kara Seas (BKS) linked to remote tropical forcing. While El Niño Southern Oscillation is often emphasized, the role of the Atlantic Niño remains poorly understood. Using reanalysis data and CESM2 large‐ensemble simulations, we show that summer

Impacts of stratospheric aerosol injection on precipitation and winds associated with extratropical cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere

open access: yesEnvironmental Research: Climate
This study seeks to describe the impact of Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) under climate change scenarios on precipitation and 10 m winds caused by extratropical cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere, using data from three international initiatives ...

Reduction of Rainfall During Tropical Cyclone Passage by Kuroshio Large Meander: A Case Study of Tropical Cyclone Talas (2011)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Tropical cyclone (TC) intensity and associated rainfall depend on sea surface temperature (SST). SSTs in southern Japan, which are often hit by TCs, are likely influenced by the path of the Kuroshio. During the Kuroshio large meander (KLM), Kuroshio creates a coexistence of local warm and cold SST anomalies near the Japanese coast.
