Tree canopy height is a key indicator of forest biomass and structure, yet accurate mapping across the Amazon remains challenging. Here, we generated a canopy height map of the Amazon forest at ~4.8 m resolution using Planet NICFI imagery and a deep learning U‐Net model trained with airborne LiDAR data.

Monitoring forest recovery from disturbances at scale requires tracking tree dynamics, yet traditional ground‐based approaches are resource‐intensive. We present a pipeline to parameterize integral projection models (IPMs) using LiDAR data and hyperspectral‐based species maps to assess post‐fire recovery across large, forested areas at the Caribou ...

Abstract Understanding the propagation patterns of hydrological droughts is crucial for drought prevention, disaster mitigation, and water resource management. Two common methodological frameworks are employed: standardized indices, represented by the Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI), and threshold‐based (non‐standardized) indices, represented by ...

Surface roughness measurements using UAV LiDAR and analysis of uncertainty factors
Abstract Surface root mean square height (SRMSH) is a key parameter characterizing surface roughness; it reflects soil hydrological properties and influences related physical processes. LiDAR offers an effective means for measuring SRMSH over large areas, yet the method involves several uncertainty factors that require further investigation.

Extreme drought deactivates ABA biosynthesis
2022The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is synthesized by plants during drought to close stomata and regulate desiccation tolerance pathways. In conifers and a few angiosperms with embolism resistant xylem a peaking-type (p-type) response in ABA levels has been observed, in which ABA levels increase early in drought then decrease as drought progresses ...

A joint extreme index for compound droughts and hot extremes
Theoretical and Applied Climatology, 2020The past decades have witnessed a surge in the study of compound droughts and hot extremes, which are among the most stressful weather and climate extremes with disastrous impacts. A suitable tool for tracking properties of compound droughts and hot extremes taking into account their dependence is desirable.

Recurrent Mild Drought Events Increase Resistance Toward Extreme Drought Stress
Ecosystems, 2014The frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events such as drought are expected to increase in the future. At present, plant responses to recurrent extreme events have been sparsely examined and the role of stress history on subsequent stress response has been widely neglected.
