Extreme Event Statistics in a Drifting Markov Chain

open access: yes, 2017
We analyse extreme event statistics of experimentally realized Markov chains with various drifts. Our Markov chains are individual trajectories of a single atom diffusing in a one dimensional periodic potential.

Changes in persistent and non-persistent extreme precipitation in China from 1961 to 2016

open access: yesAdvances in Climate Change Research, 2018
In this study, based on daily gage precipitation data of 2480 stations from 1961 to 2016, the summer (June–August) extreme precipitation event was defined using the 95th percentile, and the changes in persistent (last for at least 2 d) and non-persistent

Empirical evidence of fixed and homeostatic patterns of polyploid advantage in a keystone grass exposed to drought and heat stress [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2017
A long-standing hypothesis in evolutionary biology is that polyploid plants have a fitness advantage over diploids in climatically variable or extreme habitats.

Extreme event statistics of daily rainfall: Dynamical systems approach

open access: yes, 2016
We analyse the probability densities of daily rainfall amounts at a variety of locations on the Earth. The observed distributions of the amount of rainfall fit well to a q-exponential distribution with exponent q close to q=1.3.

The 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes and organisational learning at the University of Canterbury: does practice make perfect? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In September 2010 and again in February 2011, the city of Christchurch was rocked by earthquakes of magnitude 7.1 and 6.3 respectively. The second earthquake was shallow and caused extensive damage and loss of life, destroying most of the Central ...

Synoptic-to-intraseasonal atmospheric modulation of phytoplankton biomass in the inner sea of Chiloé, Northwest Patagonia (42.5°-43.5°S, 72.5°-74°W), Chile

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The Inner Sea of Chiloé (ISC) in northwestern Patagonia has experienced large harmful algal blooms in the past decade, impacting human health and affecting the large aquaculture industry of the region.

Semiclassical Stability of the Extreme Reissner-Nordstrom Black Hole [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
The stress-energy tensor of a free quantized scalar field is calculated in the extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black hole spacetime in the zero temperature vacuum state.

Impact and Recovery Process of Mini Flash Crashes: An Empirical Study

open access: yes, 2017
In an Ultrafast Extreme Event (or Mini Flash Crash), the price of a traded stock increases or decreases strongly within milliseconds. We present a detailed study of Ultrafast Extreme Events in stock market data.

Modelling Extreme Multivariate Events

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B: Statistical Methodology, 1991
SUMMARY The classical treatment of multivariate extreme values is through componentwise ordering, though in practice most interest is in actual extreme events. Here the point process of observations which are extreme in at least one component is considered.

A large ensemble illustration of how record-shattering heat records can endure

open access: yesEnvironmental Research: Climate, 2023
The record-shattering hot day in the Pacific Northwest in June 2021 is used to motivate a study of record-shattering temperature extremes in a very large hindcast ensemble.
