Toward Low‐Consumable Anodes: Process Simulation and Prospective Life Cycle Assessment of NiFe2O4‐NiO‐Ni‐Cu vs. Prebaked Anodes for Aluminum Production with use of Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐consumable nickel ferrite‐based anodes for the Hall–Héroult process are compared with conventional prebaked carbon anodes using thermodynamic simulation and prospective life cycle assessment under contrasting future electricity system pathways from 2025 to 2050.

Space-time dynamics in hazard exposure analysis: smartphone locations show pedestrian routes are inflexible to extreme heat events

open access: yesnpj Natural Hazards
Vulnerability to environmental hazards is spatially heterogeneous and dynamic. Static measures that are used to determine spatial heterogeneity in vulnerability are unable to capture temporal dynamics.

Heat flows for extremal Kähler metrics

open access: yesANNALI SCUOLA NORMALE SUPERIORE - CLASSE DI SCIENZE, 2009
Let $(M,J,Ω)$ be a closed polarized complex manifold of Kähler type. Let $G$ be the maximal compact subgroup of the automorphism group of $(M,J)$. On the space of Kähler metrics that are invariant under $G$ and represent the cohomology class $Ω$, we define a flow equation whose critical points are extremal metrics, those that minimize the square of the

Impact of Pre‐Oxidation Treatments on a Recycled MgO/Steel‐Composite as Carbon Free Anode in Aluminum‐Electrolysis Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Cermets (60 vol.% AISI 316L stainless steel, 40 vol.% recycled MgO), intended for use in aluminum electrolysis, were pre‐oxidized in three furnaces with different heating technologies and subjected to a cryolite corrosion test. The different atmospheres influenced the formation of oxide layers, which in turn affected corrosion resistance and ...

The gut microbiota facilitate their host tolerance to extreme temperatures

open access: yesBMC Microbiology
Background Exposure to extreme cold or heat temperature is one leading cause of weather-associated mortality and morbidity in animals. Emerging studies demonstrate that the microbiota residing in guts act as an integral factor required to modulate host ...

Extreme Weather Events, Mortality and Migration [PDF]

open access: yes
We estimate the effect of extreme weather on life expectancy in the US. Using high frequency mortality data, we find that both extreme heat and extreme cold result in immediate increases in mortality.

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

A US heat disaster? Intersection of social vulnerability and temperature extremes exacerbated by mid-century climate change and population shifts

open access: yesEnvironmental Research: Health
Future impacts of climate change-driven increases in extreme heat exposure on population health will be driven both by the frequency and intensity of future heat, as well as changes in the size and vulnerability of affected communities. Given indications

Quantum Nernst engines

open access: yes, 2014
We theoretically propose Nernst engines based on quantum Hall edge states. We identify a setup that exhibits an extreme asymmetry between the off-diagonal Onsager coefficients for heat and charge transport.
