Compound extreme events can potentially cause deadlier socio-economic consequences. Although several studies focused on individual extreme climate events, the occurrence of compound extreme events is still not well studied in the upper Midwestern United ...

Extreme heat changes post‐heat wave community reassembly
AbstractClimate forecasts project further increases in extremely high‐temperature events. These present threats to biodiversity, as they promote population declines and local species extinctions. This implies that ecological communities will need to rely more strongly on recovery processes, such as recolonization from a meta‐community context.

Ambient temperature and preterm birth: A retrospective study of 32 million US singleton births
Background: Days of extreme temperature may be associated with transiently higher risk of preterm birth, but prior studies have been limited and results have been heterogeneous.

Soil heat extremes can outpace air temperature extremes
Abstract Quantifying changes in hot temperature extremes is key for developing adaptation strategies. Changes in hot extremes are often determined on the basis of air temperatures; however, hydrology and many biogeochemical processes are more sensitive to soil temperature. Here we show that soil hot extremes are increasing faster than

Spatio-temporal Variations of Extreme Heat Events over China in Recent 62 Years
Using the daily maximum temperature datasets from 664 observational stations during the period of 1961-2022, this paper systematically analyzed the spatio-temporal distribution and variations of the extreme heat events as well as their start and end ...

Climate Change Projections of Extreme Temperatures for the Iberian Peninsula
The comprehensive characterization of heat waves and extreme hot days is fundamental for policymakers due to its vast implications for human health. This study evaluates extreme temperature changes over the Iberian Peninsula for the present climate and ...

Extreme Heat, Birth Outcomes, and Socioeconomic Heterogeneity
Abstract We investigate the effect of extreme heat on birth outcomes and how this effect may vary by family socioeconomic status (SES). We create a detailed data set by linking individual-level data on approximately 4 million newborns in Spanish provincial capitals between 1990 and 2016 with precise meteorological data on the ...

In this article we present three instruments: (1) a social vulnerability to extreme heat index to identify the areas of a city (and populations thereof) more vulnerable to extreme heat due to climate change (heat islands); (2) a new overall fragility ...

A Markov-switching model for heat waves
Heat waves merit careful study because they inflict severe economic and societal damage. We use an intuitive, informal working definition of a heat wave-a persistent event in the tail of the temperature distribution-to motivate an interpretable latent ...

The Use of a Quasi-Experimental Study on the Mortality Effect of a Heat Wave Warning System in Korea. [PDF]
Many cities and countries have implemented heat wave warning systems to combat the health effects of extreme heat. Little is known about whether these systems actually reduce heat-related morbidity and mortality.
