Heat-related mortality in Mexico: A multi-scale spatial analysis of extreme heat effects and municipality-level vulnerability

open access: yesEnvironment International
Understanding effects of extreme heat across diverse settings is critical as social determinants play an important role in modifying heat-related risks. We apply a multi-scale analysis to understand spatial variation in the effects of heat across Mexico ...

Thermodynamics of Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black holes in the grand canonical ensemble [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The main objective of this paper is to study thermodynamics and stability of static electrically charged Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space in D=4. The Euclidean action for the grand canonical ensemble is computed with the appropriate boundary terms ...

Pathogenic Neurofibromatosis type 1 gene variants in tumors of non‐NF1 patients and role of R1276

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Somatic variants of the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) gene occur across neoplasms without clinical manifestation of the disease NF1. We identified emerging somatic pathogenic NF1 variants and hotspots, for example, at the arginine finger 1276. Those missense variants provide fundamental information about neurofibromin's role in cancer.

Hummingbird foraging preferences during extreme heat events

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2023
Climate change is projected to increase global mean annual temperatures as well as the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events. These changes are anticipated to alter the behavior of animals as they seek to thermoregulate in extreme heat.

Interdecadal Variation of Summer Extreme Heat Events in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Region

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2023
Extreme heat events are frequent in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region due to global warming and accelerated urbanization. While previous studies have analyzed the trend of extreme heat events in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region, the ...

Extreme-Temperature Single-Particle Heat Engine [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters
There are many exotic thermodynamic processes that are hard to study in nature. Here, we synthesize a structured environment to explore the extremes of thermodynamics. We present an engine running at extreme temperatures of above ten Megakelvin. Our underdamped engine is realised by electrically levitating and controlling a charged microparticle in ...

Epilepsy‐Associated Variants of a Single SCN1A Codon Exhibit Divergent Functional Properties

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Pathogenic variants in SCN1A, which encodes the voltage‐gated sodium channel NaV1.1, are associated with multiple epilepsy syndromes exhibiting a range of clinical severity. SCN1A variants are reported in different syndromes, including Dravet syndrome, which is associated with loss‐of‐function, whereas neonatal/infantile‐onset ...

Unpaired Electrons in the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn_{5}

open access: yes, 2005
Thermal conductivity and specific heat were measured in the superconducting state of the heavy fermion material Ce_{1-x}La_{x}CoIn_{5}. With increasing impurity concentration x, the suppression of T_{c} is accompanied by the increase in the residual ...

Impact of Positive Lifestyle Behaviors on Direct Health Care Cost Savings for Low Back Pain

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective This study aimed to investigate the relationship between a previously purpose‐developed lifestyle behavior scale and health care cost savings related to low back pain (LBP). Methods This longitudinal study used data from the Australian Twin Back (AUTBACK) study. LBP and lifestyle behavior measures were collected at baseline. Physical activity
