Genetic Programming for Downscaling Extreme Rainfall Events

2013 1st International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Modelling and Simulation, 2013
Downscaling extreme rainfall events is a major challenge in climate change study. A Genetic Programming (GP) based method is used in this article for the downscaling of extreme rainfall events in the East coast of peninsular Malaysia during northeast monsoon season.

Extreme Rainfall Events over Southern Africa

2011
It is generally agreed that changing climate variability, and the associated change in climate extremes, may have a greater impact on environmentally vulnerable regions than a changing mean. This research investigates rainfall variability, rainfall extremes and their associations with atmospheric and oceanic circulations over southern Africa, a region ...

Extreme rainfall events during and following heatwaves

2021

Heatwaves and extreme rainfall events are natural hazards that can have severe impacts on society. The relationship between temperature and extreme rainfall has received scientific attention with studies focussing on how single daily or sub-daily rainfall extremes are related to day-to-day temperature variability.

Probabilistic envelope curves for extreme rainfall events

Journal of Hydrology, 2009
Summary This study extends the concept of the regional envelope curve (REC) of flood flows to extreme rainstorm events by introducing the Depth-Duration Envelope Curves (DDEC). DDEC are defined as regional upper bounds on observed rainfall maxima for several rainfall durations.

Frequency analysis of extreme rainfall events

2010
GM000976-TE-El_Adlou f The study of the rainfall probability distributions is important to estimate large events and their probability of occurrence. This paper presents the usefulness of extreme hydrological frequency analysis when the occurrences are independent in time to describe the likelihood of extreme events over the time horizon. Classical and

Dominant events in extreme rainfall records

Journal of Hydrology, 1992
Abstract A maximum rainfall over a short interval will sometimes be greater than the maximum persisting over a longer interval. Data from this situation are usually taken as point values in the analysis of extremes but these maxima are interpretable as upper bounds for the longer interval.

Observing Extreme Rainfall Events at Fine Timescales

2022

The Computational Hydrometeorology Lab in National Taiwan University (NTU CompHydroMet Lab) recently launched a rainfall monitoring network, with a special focus on observing extreme storm events, such as typhoons and thunderstorms, over the south area of Taipei.

Extreme Rainfall Events in the Hawaiian Islands

Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, 2009
AbstractHeavy rainfall and the associated floods occur frequently in the Hawaiian Islands and have caused huge economic losses as well as social problems. Extreme rainfall events in this study are defined by three different methods based on 1) the mean annual number of days on which 24-h accumulation exceeds a given daily rainfall amount, 2) the value ...

Trends in extreme rainfall events of Bangladesh

Theoretical and Applied Climatology, 2010
A study of the variability of the extreme rainfall events in Bangladesh during the time period 1958–2007 has been carried out in this paper. Quality-controlled homogeneous daily precipitation records of nine stations distributed over Bangladesh are used for the study. A total of 15 annual and seasonal indices of rainfall are examined.

On the Probability of Extreme Rainfall Events

Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1973
In recent years, the terms, “once-in-a-century” and 100-year, have been attached to various rare and catastrophic events; recent examples are the rains associated with Hurricane Agnes and the 1972 Rapid City storm. The background for the use of these terms is examined from the points of view of both the professional and nonprofessional user.
