Extreme Value Statistics

2018
This Capstone chapter illustrates how concepts in the book come together to diagnose real-world dynamics from observed time series data. In particular, we apply NLTS to diagnose multi-strain infectious disease dynamics from weekly cases of scarlet fever, measles, and pertussis in New York during the pre-vaccine period 1924-1948.

Novelty Detection with Multivariate Extreme Value Statistics

Journal of Signal Processing Systems, 2010
Novelty detection, or one-class classification, aims to determine if data are "normal" with respect to some model of normality constructed using examples of normal system behaviour. If that model is composed of generative probability distributions, the extent of "normality" in the data space can be described using Extreme Value Theory (EVT), a branch ...

Extreme Value Statistics

1994
The sea dike problem: The Dutch government specifies that sea dikes should be built so high that a flood occurs once in 10,000 years (assuming stationarity), i.e. the probability of a flood in a given year should be 1/10,000.

Approximate Formulae for the Statistical Distributions of Extreme Values

Biometrika, 1958
0 1. SUMMARY This paper deals with the distribution function of the order statistics xn_m+l(m = 1, 2 ... ), Mn,m(x). For this distribution function of the mth largest value (if m is counted from above) approximate formulae are derived. These formulae are generalizations of the corresponding approximate formulae for the distribution of the extremes ...
