THE EXTREME HOSTS OF EXTREME SUPERNOVAE [PDF]
We use GALEX ultraviolet (UV) and optical integrated photometry of the hosts of seventeen luminous supernovae (LSNe, having peak M_V < -21) and compare them to a sample of 26,000 galaxies from a cross-match between the SDSS DR4 spectral catalog and GALEX interim release 1.1.

Extremism and the Extreme Personality

Which Extreme Values Are Really Extreme? [PDF]
We define the extreme values of any random sample of size n from a distribution function F as the observations exceeding a threshold and following a type of generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) involving the tail index of F. The threshold is the order statistic that minimizes a Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic between the empirical distribution of the ...

On the Existence of an Extremal Function in the Delsarte Extremal Problem [PDF]
AbstractThis paper is concerned with a Delsarte-type extremal problem. Denote by$${\mathcal {P}}(G)$$P(G)the set of positive definite continuous functions on a locally compact abelian groupG. We consider the function class, which was originally introduced by Gorbachev,$$\begin{aligned}&{\mathcal {G}}(W, Q)_G = \left\{ f \in {\mathcal {P}}(G) \cap L^

Urbanization alters rainfall extremes over the contiguous United States
Anthropogenic changes are likely to intensify rainfall extremes, posing a risk to human, environmental and urban systems. Understanding the impact of urbanization on rainfall extremes is critical for both reliable climate projections as well as ...

Evaluating the Simulation of CONUS Precipitation by Storm Type in E3SM
Conventional low‐resolution (LR) climate models, including the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SMv1), have well‐known biases in simulating the frequency, intensity, and timing of precipitation.

21st birthday drinking: Extremely extreme. [PDF]
Despite public recognition of the hazards of 21st birthday drinking, there is little empirical information concerning its prevalence, severity, and risk factors. Data from a sample of 2,518 college students suggest that 21st birthday drinking poses an extreme danger: (a) 4 of every 5 participants (83%) reported drinking to celebrate, (b) birthday ...
