For years, restoring sight to the blind has been counted as nothing less than miraculous. Today, computer engineering, ophthalmology and biology are uniting in an effort to achieve just that. This article on bio-electronic vision or popularly, "the artificial eye" explains briefly how far the field has come and how far it has yet to go.

Artificial Eyes and Tear Measurements
Ophthalmology, 1980Ninety-four consecutive persons with unilateral enucleations or eviscerations were tested by the Schirmer I and Schirmer II tests for tear production. The findings on the artificial eye were compared with those on the companion, living (control) eye. The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis.

An artificial compound eye for stereoendoscopy
Journal of Medical Engineering & Technology, 2004A scanning endoscope has been designed with the ability to both project three-dimensional images and provide precise measurements of internal structures. This is beneficial for minimally invasive surgery, where surgeons suffer from a lack of depth perception, limited field of view, and the absence of a reference frame for dimensional measurements ...

A blind person always remain dependent on assistant to move from one place to another. If they move by themselves they can harm themselves because they are not able to identify the obstacle in their path. To make them independent a smart stick is proposed in this paper. This stick makes the blind person independent.

Artificial Eyes and the Artificialization of the Human Face
2006A facial prosthesis is an artefact, requiring art and skill to make.1 It may be considered more humble and more functional than a fine oil painting but the technical accomplishment required to make it may be equal and the emotional effect it can have on both wearer and spectator may even be greater; to its owner a prosthesis is no mere material ...
