The promise of international eye banking [PDF]
According to the World Health Organization, world blindness has been put between 28 to 42 million. Of this number, well over 10 million are corneally blind. Tissue Banks International, TBI, through its international division known as the International Federation of Eye Banks, IFEB, is assisting in establishing regional eye banks on a global basis.

To the Editor: —The procurement of eyes for corneal transplants is running far behind the need. Catherine Rhoads, Executive Director of the Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration in New York City states that the organization receives eyes there at the rate of about 1,000 per year and would need 50% more to meet its current needs. A similar situation exists in

Eye banking: 1944 to the present
Survey of Ophthalmology, 1989Through the efforts of Dr. Townley Paton, eye banks were founded in New York in the early 1940s. Since that time there has been steady growth in both the supply of and demand for donor material. A number of factors have contributed to the success of eye banks in the U.S.A., including improvements in eye banking techniques and administration, increase ...

New Screening Methods for Donor Eye-Bank Eyes
Cornea, 1999Current methods of screening donor eyes for corneal transplantation are not always effective in excluding corneas with abnormal topography. We used the Orbscan to determine whether corneal-thickness maps could be used as a technique for donor tissue screening.Forty eye-bank eyes were measured with the Orbscan, and a corneal-thickness map was generated.

Corneal Preparation of Eye Bank Eyes for Experimental Surgery
Cornea, 2001To evaluate the efficacy of dextran in balanced salt solution (BSS) as a preparation of eye bank corneas for experimental surgeries. We used 12 eye bank eyes that were unsuitable for transplant. The corneas were removed from the globe and affixed to a Hanna artificial anterior chamber. Four concentrations of dextran-BSS (10%, 15%, 20%, and 30% [+/-0.56%]
