Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

A challenging differential diagnosis - Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy

open access: yesRomanian Journal of Ophthalmology
Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is the most common maternally inherited disease linked to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The patients present with subacute asymmetric bilateral vision loss. Approximately 95% of the LHON cases are caused by m.3460G>

RNA‐Micelles as Self‐Assembling Structures for Efficient Co‐Delivery of Synergistic siRNA and Nucleoside Analogues to Treat CRC Lung Metastasis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Two kinds of self‐assembled RNA micelles were used to co‐deliver synergistic siRNA and nucleoside analogues for the treatment of colorectal cancer lung metastases. Near‐complete elimination of lung cancer metastases was confirmed in an orthotopic lung metastasis model constructed using human colorectal cancer lung metastases patient surgical samples to

Sudden cardiac death in the young. From gross to molecular autopsy

open access: yesJournal of Biological Research
Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) may complicate diseases of the heart and great vessels. The cause is easily visible at the naked eye at autopsy in the presence of coronary thrombosis, aortic dissection, pulmonary thromboembolism, or at the microscope with ...

Contact Lens with Moiré Patterns for High‐Precision Eye Tracking

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a passive contact lens for high‐precision eye tracking, integrating a microscopic moiré grating label. The parallax‐induced shift of macroscopic moiré patterns enables angle measurement with 0.28° precision using a standard camera under ambient light.

Controlling 3D Contractility via Engineered Fibrous Hydrogel Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A tunable composite contractile assembly (CCA) is developed that can permit or resist contraction without changing cell‐adhesion and density, unlike collagen whose inherent coupling of these ECM cues limits its use as a platform in contractility studies.

Photobiomodulation Using Light-Emitting Diode (LED) for Treatment of Retinal Diseases

open access: yesClinical Ophthalmology
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a type of phototherapy that employs light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or low-power lasers to selectively administer specific wavelengths of visible light, ranging from 500 to 1000 nm, including near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. LEDs

Nanothermometry in Living Cells: Physical Limits, Conceptual and Material Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heat and temperature are fundamental to life. When nanothermometers began probing regions as small as a living cell, they triggered controversial claims of large intracellular temperature gradients. We review physical constraints energy‐conservation, entropy production, thermodynamic fluctuations, and molecular dynamics.

Research progress on common ocular surface diseases related to astigmatism in children

open access: yesYanke Xuebao
Astigmatism is a significant threat to children's visual development and is often closely linked to the progression of ocular surface diseases. Non-congenital conditions, such as blepharitis-associated keratoconjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis ...
