Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.

Ignoring Fossil Age Uncertainty Leads to Inaccurate Topology and Divergence Time Estimates in Time Calibrated Tree Inference

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2020
Time calibrated trees are challenging to estimate for many extinct groups of species due to the incompleteness of the rock and fossil records. Additionally, the precise age of a sample is typically not known as it may have occurred at any time during the

A Mechanistic Study of Bio‐Based Nanotemplated Carbon Nanofibers Derived From Water Processable Lignin Blends for Sustainable Energy Storage Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
As‐spun carbon materials produced from Lignosulfonate, gelatin, and alginate, selected for water solubility, and ability to produce templated sustainable carbon nanostructures. Gelatin and alginate are sacrificial during thermal processing, allowing the production of engineered high surface area nanostructures, which are further characterized for ...

Digitized Fossil Brains: Neocorticalization

open access: yesBiolinguistics, 2012
This report is based on 3D digital scans of endocasts of 110 species of fossil mammals and 35 species of living mammals. It presents direct evidence of the last 60 million years of brain evolution. Endocasts are casts of the cranial cavity.

Advanced Separators for Liquid and Quasi‐Solid Lithium Rechargeable Batteries: Design and Development

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review traces the evolution of lithium‐ion battery separators from passive barriers to multifunctional components central to cell safety and performance. Polymer‐ceramic hybrids, nanofiber architectures, and bio‐derived membranes deliver ionic conductivities above 3 mS cm−1, thermal stability beyond 200 °C, and effective suppression of lithium ...
