The representation of Föhn events to the east of the Antarctic Peninsula in simulations by the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System (AMPS) [PDF]
We examine the representation of Föhn events across the Antarctic Peninsula Mountains during 2011 as they were observed in measurements by an Automatic Weather Station, and in simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) as run for ...

Observationally constrained surface mass balance of Larsen C ice shelf, Antarctica [PDF]
The surface mass balance (SMB) of the Larsen C ice shelf (LCIS), Antarctica, is poorly constrained due to a dearth of in situ observations. Combining several geophysical techniques, we reconstruct spatial and temporal patterns of SMB over the LCIS ...

Scale interaction processes during the MAP IOP 12 south föhn event in the Rhine Valley
This paper examines the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of a south föhn flow in the Rhine Valley during its entire life cycle from 29 October 1999 until 31 October 1999.

Design of a carrier-depletion Mach-Zehnder modulator in 250 nm silicon-on-insulator technology [PDF]
We present the design of a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator for amplitude modulation in silicon-on-insulator technology with 250 nm active layer thickness. The applied RF signal modulates the carrier density in a reverse biased lateral pn-junction.

Centuries of intense surface melt on Larsen C Ice Shelf [PDF]
Following a southward progression of ice-shelf disintegration along the Antarctic Peninsula (AP), Larsen C Ice Shelf (LCIS) has become the focus of ongoing investigation regarding its future stability.

Observations and numerical simulations of a valley‐exit wind in the Alpine Bolzano basin
The evolution and spreading of the nocturnal valley‐exit wind flowing from the Isarco Valley into the Bolzano basin, in the Italian Alps, are found to be influenced by the basin temperature stratification. Measurements and high‐resolution simulations show that a cold‐air pool favors an upward trajectory of the flow at the exit of the valley.

Novel airflow ring for the reduction of germ load in a surgical field
Hospital-acquired infections occur through microbial contamination of the surgical wound and can lead to severe complications. A significant transmission path is the aerogenic transmission, where pathogens stick to floating particles like skin scales or ...
