SmO thin films: a flexible route to correlated flat bands with nontrivial topology

open access: yes, 2015
Using density functional theory based calculations, we show that the correlated mixed-valent compound SmO is a 3D strongly topological semi-metal as a result of a 4$f$-5$d$ band inversion at the X point.

Nucleofugal behavior of a β-shielded α-cyanovinyl carbanion

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2018
Sterically well-shielded against unsolicited Michael addition and polymerization reactions, α-metalated α-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylindan-2-ylidene)acetonitriles added reversibly to three small aldehydes and two bulky ketones at room temperature.

Ultra-Thin Platinum Deposits by Surface-Limited Redox Replacement of Tellurium

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2018
Platinum is the most employed electrocatalyst for the reactions taking place in energy converters, such as the oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, despite being a very low abundant element in the earth’s crust and thus

DELP Treatment on Vision and Retinal Microcirculation in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke: Report of Five Cases and Literature Review

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background The delipid extracorporeal lipoprotein filter from plasma (DELP) treatment can effectively reduce blood lipid, increase blood flow, and improve neurological deficits in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, its effect on vision and retinal microcirculation in stroke patients has never been reported.

A Comparative Study of Cerebral Oxygenation During Exercise in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Cognitive impairment and exercise intolerance are common in dialysis patients. Cerebral perfusion and oxygenation play a major role in both cognitive function and exercise execution; HD session per se aggravates cerebral ischemia in this population. This study aimed to compare cerebral oxygenation and perfusion at rest and in mild

Air Force and Three Moments for F-5-L Seaplane [PDF]

open access: yes
A model of the F-5-L seaplane was made, verified, and tested at 40 miles an hour in the 8' x 8' tunnel for lift and drag, also for pitching, yawing and rolling moments. Subsequently, the yawing moment test was repeated with a modified fin.

The BeppoSAX HELLAS survey: on the nature of faint hard X-ray selected sources

open access: yes, 2000
The BeppoSAX 4.5-10 keV High Energy Large Area Survey has covered about 80 square degrees of sky down to a flux of F(5-10keV)~5E-14 cgs. Optical spectroscopic identification of about half of the sources in the sample (62) shows that many (~50%) are ...

Halofuginone suppresses the lung metastasis of chemically induced hepatocellular carcinoma in rats through MMP inhibition

open access: yesNeoplasia: An International Journal for Oncology Research, 2006
Halofuginone, an inhibitor of collagen synthesis, appears to be a promising antitumoral drug in preclinical studies. We used a relevant rat model of autochthonous, chemically induced, spontaneously metastasizing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to test the

Revealing the structure of land plant photosystem II: the journey from negative‐stain EM to cryo‐EM

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Advances in cryo‐EM have revealed the detailed structure of Photosystem II, a key protein complex driving photosynthesis. This review traces the journey from early low‐resolution images to high‐resolution models, highlighting how these discoveries deepen our understanding of light harvesting and energy conversion in plants.

Analysis of Nb3Sn surface layers for superconducting RF cavity applications

open access: yes, 2015
We present an analysis of the Nb3Sn surface layers grown on a bulk niobium (Nb) coupon prepared at the same time and by the same vapor diffusion process used to make Nb3Sn coatings on 1.3 GHz cavities.
