Lowering backward Raman and Brillouin scattering in waveguide Raman wavelength converters
Background Liquid filled hollow core fiber Raman wavelength converters are devices enabling to red-shift the wavelength of laser beams delivered by either fixed wavelength or tunable lasers. Most of the reported converters operate in a pulsed regime with

Antenna surface plasmon emission by inelastic tunneling
Developing a microscale ultrafast electrical source of surface plasmons is crucial for nanophotonic applications. Here, the authors report the design, fabrication and characterization of nanoantennas for emission and control of surface plasmons by ...

Polarization conversion with a photonic crystal slab [PDF]
We show that a photonic crystal slab can enable efficient polarization conversion. Two mechanisms are identified. The first mechanism relies on the anisotropy of the bulk properties of the metamaterial and is mediated by interferences.

Role of Static Modes in Quasinormal Modes Expansions: When and How to Take Them into Account?
The scattering of electromagnetic waves by a resonator is determined by the excitation of the eigenmodes of the system. In the case of open resonators made of absorbing materials, the system is non-Hermitian, and the eigenmodes are quasinormal modes ...

We present a short proof of the Fabry quotient theorem, which states that for a complex power series with unit radius of convergence, if the quotient of its consecutive coefficients tends to $ s $, then the point $ z=s $ is a singular point of the series. This proof only uses material from undergraduate university studies.

Estimation precision of degree of polarization in the presence of signal-dependent and additive Poisson noises [PDF]
We address precision of estimation of the degree of polarization (DOP) from the orthogonal state contrast image (OSCI) in the presence of both signal-dependent Poisson noise due to useful signal, and additive Poisson noise due to dark current and / or ...

High Performance Durable Vanadium Dioxide Spectral Selective Modulation Smart Windows
Crystallinity‐enhanced VO2 nanoparticles with a self‐limited amorphous oxidation shell achieve an order of magnitude durability improvement and high spectral selective modulation performance (luminous transmittance of 28.5%, solar modulation of 10.5%, and mid‐infrared emissivity modulation of 0.5) for smart windows.

Design of nanofibres for efficient stimulated Raman scattering in the evanescent field [PDF]
Nanofibres can be produced with diameters smaller than the wavelength of the light they guide. In this regime, the guided mode presents a strong evanescent field well adapted to the excitation of “evanescent nonlinearities”.

Type-I intermittency route to chaos in passively Q-switched Tm:YLF laser emitting at 2.3 μm [PDF]
We report on an original chaotic dynamic behaviour of a passively Q-switched 2.3-μm Thulium laser operating on the 3H4 → 3H5 transition. The experiment employs a Tm:LiYF4 laser crystal within various laser cavity configurations, involving optional ...
