Between Droughts and Floods: The Seasonal Response of Freshwater Snails in Artificial Reservoirs in the Brazilian Semiarid Region

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We investigate the seasonal dynamics of two freshwater snails, Biomphalaria straminea and Melanoides tuberculata, in artificial reservoirs of the Brazilian semiarid region. Despite regulated hydrology, B. straminea exhibited strong seasonal fluctuations associated with dry periods, while M. tuberculata maintained stable populations throughout the year,

Active and passive fields face to face

open access: yes, 2004
The statistical properties of active and passive scalar fields transported by the same turbulent flow are investigated. Four examples of active scalar have been considered: temperature in thermal convection, magnetic potential in two-dimensional ...

Moving in the Dark: Enlightening the Spatial Population Ecology of European Cave Salamanders

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We assessed individual interactions, movement ecology and activity patterns of a subterranean population of Speleomantes strinatii, applying spatial capture–recapture modeling to a photographic dataset of 104 individuals. ABSTRACT Space use and movement are fundamental aspects of organisms' ecology, mirroring individual fitness, behavior, and life ...

Face-to-Face, Pak-to-Pak [PDF]

open access: yesStructure, 2011
Biochemical and structural studies of p21-activated kinase 1 (Pak1) by Wang and colleagues in this issue of Structure reveal the structural basis for Pak1 trans-autophosphorylation of the activation loop, a critical step in the activation of kinases.

FoxO1 signaling in B cell malignancies and its therapeutic targeting

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
FoxO1 has context‐specific tumor suppressor or oncogenic character in myeloid and B cell malignancies. This includes tumor‐promoting properties such as stemness maintenance and DNA damage tolerance in acute leukemias, or regulation of cell proliferation and survival, or migration in mature B cell malignancies.

Face Adaptation without a Face [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2010
Prolonged viewing of a stimulus results in a subsequent perceptual bias. This perceptual adaptation and the resulting aftereffect reveal important characteristics regarding how perceptual systems are tuned. These aftereffects occur not only for simple stimulus features but also for high-level stimulus properties.

ExpressionBot: An Emotive Lifelike Robotic Face for Face-to-Face Communication

open access: yes, 2014
This article proposes an emotive lifelike robotic face, called ExpressionBot, that is designed to support verbal and non-verbal communication between the robot and humans, with the goal of closely modeling the dynamics of natural face-to-face ...
