The undercutting and pointing of face‐gears

Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers, 1998
Abstract Undercutting and pointing are serious problems in the performance of face‐gears. Based on the theory of gearing, the tooth geometry of the face‐gear along with the sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence and regularity of the generated face‐gear tooth surfaces were investigated.

Design parameters for face gears

Journal of Mechanisms, 1971
Abstract A general formulation to calculate critical dimensions such as the maximum practical outside diameter and the maximum face width of face gears in their general contact condition is presented. For the case of a face gear in mesh with an involute spur pinion on an intersecting orthogonal shaft, the necessary equations to calculate these ...

Face Gear Drives

2020
In this chapter, the ever-increasing importance of face gear drives is first underlined, and short notes on their cutting processes are provided. The generation processes and geometrical elements of a face gear pair are then defined, and the basic topics of face gear manufacturing and bearing contact are given.

Research on the Abrasive Machining of Face Gear

Key Engineering Materials, 2009
According to the forming theory of face gear’s teeth surface, abrasive machining of face gear was studied through establishing abrasive machining coordinating system. The movement of every device of the grinding machine for face gear’s abrasive machining was also analyzed.

Kinematic Study of the Face Gear

16th Design Automation Conference: Volume 2 — Optimal Design and Mechanical Systems Analysis, 1990
Abstract This paper presents the kinematic study of the face gear drive system. The study includes three different configurations which are: (1) the on-center orthogonal face gear drive, (2) the on-center non-orthogonal face gear drive, and (3) the offset orthogonal face gear drive.

The Research on Generation of Arc Face-Gears

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2010
By a study on the theory of generation processing arc face-gears, a machining method was designed by generation characteristics on the arc face-gears pairs. Based on coordinate transformation principle and meshing equation, the arc tooth surface equations were derived and corresponding 3D model was build.

Some studies on hypoid face gears

Mechanism and Machine Theory, 1973
Abstract Some of the geometric characteristics of a hypoid face gear in mesh with an involute spur pinion are analysed. These geometric characteristics include (a) the maximum diameter of the hypoid gear to avoid pointing of the teeth, (b) the minimum diameter for avoiding undercutting, (c) the contact ratio, (d) the field of contact and (e) the ...

Optimization of face-hobbed hypoid gears

Mechanism and Machine Theory, 2014
Abstract In this study, an optimization methodology is presented to systematically define head-cutter geometry and machine tool settings to introduce optimal tooth modifications in face-hobbed hypoid gears. The goal of the optimization is to simultaneously minimize tooth contact pressures and angular displacement error of the driven gear (the ...

Face Gear Width Prediction Using the DOE Method

Journal of Mechanical Design, 2008
This paper deals with face gear design. The goal is to propose a simple formula for predicting the width of the wheel as a function of the main design parameters. A specific software was used to achieve this goal. This numerical tool is able to simulate the geometry and the quasistatic loaded behavior of a face gear.
