Deep Evolution for Facial Emotion Recognition

open access: yesCoRR, 2020
Deep facial expression recognition faces two challenges that both stem from the large number of trainable parameters: long training times and a lack of interpretability. We propose a novel method based on evolutionary algorithms, that deals with both challenges by massively reducing the number of trainable parameters, whilst simultaneously retaining ...

Vestibular Patient Journey: Insights From Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA) Registry

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Vestibular symptoms impose a high burden of disability. Understanding real‐world diagnostic and treatment pathways can identify care gaps and guide interventions. We aimed to characterize symptom profiles, diagnostic trends, provider involvement, and treatment patterns in vestibular disorders.

Hypomimia May Influence the Facial Emotion Recognition Ability in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

open access: yesJournal of Parkinson’s Disease, 2022
Background: Hypomimia is a clinical feature of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Based on the embodied simulation theory, the impairment of facial mimicry may worsen facial emotion recognition; however, the empirical results are inconclusive. Objective: We aimed

Emotion recognition and intellectual disability : development of the kinetic emotion recognition assessment and evaluation of the emotion specificity hypothesis : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Clinical Psychology at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Deficits in social adaptive functioning are a defining criterion of intellectual disability (ID) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013), and a key predictor of social inclusion and subsequent quality of life (Kozma, Mansell, & Beadle-Brown, 2009 ...

Emotion recognition using facial expressions

open access: yesProcedia Computer Science, 2017
Abstract In the article there are presented the results of recognition of seven emotional states (neutral, joy, sadness, surprise, anger, fear, disgust) based on facial expressions. Coefficients describing elements of facial expressions, registered for six subjects, were used as features.

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Impaired Perception of Emotional Expression in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background and Purpose The increasing recognition that deficits in social emotions occur in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is helping to explain the spectrum of neuropsychological dysfunctions, thus supporting the view of ALS as a multisystem ...

Facial Emotion Recognition with AI

open access: yes
The paper presents a work with AI on using computer vision algorithms to detect human emotions in the context of the video when the user looks at different video images. This work aims to present the development of software that detects emotions by recognizing users’ facial expressions using AI algorithms and image process pipelines.

Memory and Resting‐State Connectivity in Acute Transient Global Amnesia: A Case–Control fMRI Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a striking model of isolated amnesia. While hippocampal lesions are well described, the network‐level mechanisms and the precise neuropsychological profile remain debated. Our objective was thus to characterize functional and neuropsychological correlates of acute TGA and their ...
