Cortical bone distribution in the human mandibular symphysis: Ontogenic and morphometric approaches in archeological context

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The human mandibular symphysis concentrates multiaxial loads during function and remodels throughout growth, but the precise mechanisms underlying cortical bone shape during growth remain relatively unexplored. Approaches based solely on thickness or external cortical contours provide only partial insights and do not capture the functional ...

Previously undocumented regional variability in crab‐eating macaque skull sexual dimorphism and its implications for biological and morphometric studies

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract In a large sample of adult crab‐eating macaques, we quantified sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and covariance across the whole skull and among anatomical regions of the cranium and mandible. All regions showed significant mean sex differences, but the magnitude of size and shape dimorphism varied substantially.

The petrotympanic canal (Huguier canal): Evolutionary, anatomical, and medical perspectives

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The petrotympanic canal, traditionally referred to as Civinini's or Huguier's canal, represents an anatomical passage connecting the middle ear and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Despite its early description, its structural complexity and functional significance have often been underestimated. In this study, we combined historical, anatomical,

Exploring the cranial morphology and possible convergences of Triassic non‐crocodylomorph pseudosuchians (Archosauria: Pseudosuchia) with other sauropsids through linear morphometrics

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Triassic pseudosuchians had highly diversified cranial morphologies. These archosaurs occupied diverse ecological roles, ranging from terrestrial predators and herbivores to semiaquatic ambush predators and possible waders. Here, we apply linear cranial morphometrics to assess possible convergences with other sauropsids from the clades ...

LAFS: Landmark-based Facial Self-supervised Learning for Face Recognition [PDF]

open access: yes
In this work we focus on learning facial representations that can be adapted to train effective face recognition models, particularly in the absence of labels. Firstly, compared with existing labelled face datasets, a vastly larger magnitude of unlabeled

Dog facial landmarks detection and its applications for facial analysis

open access: yesScientific Reports
Automated analysis of facial expressions is a crucial challenge in the emerging field of animal affective computing. One of the most promising approaches in this context is facial landmarks, which are well-studied for humans and are now being adopted for

The mechanism of labor in nonhuman primates: A look inside

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract While in humans, the flexed position of the fetus and its rotating course down the birth canal are well documented, in other primates the mechanism of labor is unknown. Despite the lack of comparative data, it is commonly assumed that the human obstetric mechanism is unique, and anthropologists have disputed when and why the transition to the ...

DETEKSI LANDMARK CITRA WAJAH DENGAN EXTRAKSI FITUR GABOR ANALISA FUZZY

open access: yesJurnal Informatika, 2003
This paper proposes a method that automatically finds human faces as well as its landmark points in color images based on a fuzzy analysis. The proposed approach first uses color information to detect face candidate regions and then uses a fuzzy analysis

Three‐dimensional digital analysis of musteloid masticatory muscle architecture

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Musteloids span an enormous breadth of dietary modes within a single superfamily. In this study, we utilize digital dissection techniques to reconstruct the internal 3D anatomy of muscles within the musteloid feeding apparatus, and explore how dietary specializations might alter the size, orientation, and curvature of fascicles therein.

Evolutionary morphology of the haplorhine hamate

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Primates adopt a variety of hand postures during an impressive diversity of locomotor and manipulative behaviors. Morphological research has found that elements of the hand skeleton, such as the hamate, hold key information for inferring hand use and locomotor kinematics in extinct species.
