Out in the cold? A review of Early Middle Palaeolithic settlements in northern Central Europe, age data and geological preconditions for site formation and preservation

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The characteristics of settlement of Neanderthals in northern Central Europe during the earlier phases of the Middle Palaeolithic (Marine Isotope Stage 8–6) have been a matter of debate for decades, specifically regarding the population dynamics at such latitudes during the coldest phases. In this paper, we review the known archaeological record of the

Refining the timing of Middle Pleistocene (MIS 12 to MIS 6) ice advances into northern central Europe: sedimentological analysis and single‐grain luminescence dating of glaciotectonic complexes and tunnel‐valley fills

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We summarize the current state of knowledge on the age of the Middle Pleistocene ice advances into northern central Europe and provide 25 new single‐grain feldspar luminescence ages of Elsterian and Saalian glacigenic sediments to constrain the age of the ice advances and their tentative correlation with marine isotope stages/substages.

A pairwise likelihood approach for the empirical estimation of the underlyingvariograms in the plurigaussian models

open access: yes, 2015
The plurigaussian model is particularly suited to describe categorical regionalized variables. Starting from a simple principle, the thresh-olding of one or several Gaussian random fields (GRFs) to obtain categories, the plurigaussian model is well ...

Stochastic Facies Modeling of the Lower‐Burdekin Delta Aquifer Based on Lithological Interpretation From Legacy Boreholes

open access: yesWater Resources Research
The spatial heterogeneity of aquifer properties plays an important role in the movement of groundwater and contaminants. The characterization of heterogeneity from field observations is often needed to develop groundwater models used to inform management

Droughts and human impact in the ancient Uaymil region of the Maya lowlands inferred from a 2800‐year sedimentary archive at Lake Kaná, Mexico

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The relationship between the climate and societal transformation in Maya lowlands has long been debated, particularly the role of drought in shaping the civilization trajectory during the Classic Period. A high‐resolution, multi‐proxy, geochemical record from Lake Kaná, located in the underexplored Uaymil region of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico ...

Identifying the pre‐Odra river system with hydroacoustic and seismic reflection imagery offshore Rügen Island, southern Baltic Sea

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Understanding the course and dynamics of ancient river systems, such as the pre‐Odra, provides valuable insights into the post‐glacial evolution of landscapes and riverine processes. The northwest‐trending pre‐Odra was an important drainage system of the European mainland into the Baltic Basin during and after the Scandinavian Ice Sheet retreat ...

Thorncliffe Formation: A proglacial to subglacial lacustrine basin sequence, Greater Toronto Region, Canada

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Map of Lower sediment (LS) thickness is a surrogate for the distribution of Thorncliffe Formation (TF) and ~75% of TF thickness from the slope of Niagara Escarpment east to Brighton. Inset images show the LS sequence at the Don Valleys brickyards (DVBY) and undeformed TF sand and gravel (~15 m) below Newmarket Till (NT) at sites L and Co.

Three-Dimensional Geological Modeling Method for Fault-Block Carbonate Reservoirs Based on Hierarchical Control and Multi-Information Fusion

open access: yesShiyou huagong gaodeng xuexiao xuebao
Compared with clastic reservoirs, carbonate reservoirs have extremely strong heterogeneity, multiple types of storage spaces, and uneven development of pores, caves, and fractures. How to characterize the three-dimensional storage space of strongly ...

Chironomid‐based summer temperature reconstruction of the Eemian–Weichselian transition at Lichtenberg, northern Germany

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Understanding the temperature variability of past interglacial cycles is essential to predict future climates. We present a new summer temperature reconstruction, based on the subfossil chironomid record from a small palaeolake adjacent to the Middle Palaeolithic site of Lichtenberg, northern Germany. The record spans from the Saalian late glacial over

Estimation of Lithofacies Proportions Using Well and Well Test Data Estimation des proportions lithologiques à partir des données de puits et d'essais de puits

open access: yesOil & Gas Science and Technology, 2006
A crucial step of the two commonly used geostatistical methods for modeling heterogeneous reservoirs : the sequential indicator simulation and the truncated Gaussian simulation is the estimation of the lithofacies local proportion (or probability density)
