Factor VII activity and antigen in a patient with abnormal factor VII

A patient with abnormal factor VII, which showed different activity when thromboplastin from different sources was used, is reported. The propositus, who was first seen at routine health examination 1 month after delivery, was a girl with no complaints of bleeding.

This communication describes the different techniques that can be used to evaluate the activity state of factor VII in plasma samples. At the present time direct methods for quantitation of activated factor VII (factor α-VIIa) are not available. Combined methods are therefore used to measure the degree of factor VII activation.

Factor VII deficiency and its treatment in delivery with recombinant factor VII

The authors present two cases of pregnant women with coagulation disorders--one with inherited deficiency of factor VII and the second with chronic hepatitis. Both cases were successfully treated with recombinant activated factor VII of coagulation (NovoSeven) in delivery. The advantages of using this product are discussed.

Summary A case of factor VII deficiency in a PuertoRican boy is described. He presented with epistaxis as the only symptom. The importance of early diagnosis of the defect is stressed. Identification of heterozygous carriers is also of importance because these persons, for unknown reasons, might present with hemorrhagic diathesis.

A modified semi‐automated method with an artificially prepared factor‐VII deficient plasma, one batch of freeze‐dried thromboplastin and one freeze‐dried pooled reference plasma was used throughout.
