Background Tropical montane cloud forests are one of the most important hotspots on Earth and show presence of relict-endemic and endangered species, representing about 14% of the total tropical forest worldwide. Synchronous seed production or masting in

Warm Spring Weather Alters Calling Phenology of Four Sympatric Early‐Breeding Anurans
An unusually warm March in 2024 (“false spring”) followed by freezing temperatures allowed us to assess the impact of a weather event on an amphibian community. The calling activity of all four species was associated with increasing temperature, and the first date of calling was advanced by 11–18 days.

Abstract Understanding the drivers of change in communities is a major goal of paleoecology and community ecology, but statistical inference from multivariate time series is challenged by relative (rather than absolute) abundance data, observation uncertainty and missing data due to uneven sampling through time.

Declining temperate forest biodiversity is a global challenge to future sustainability and resilience. Canopy tree diversity has declined in northern hardwood forests (NHFs) of the Great Lakes region since European colonization, with current tree ...

Summary Reflectance spectroscopy is a rapid method for estimating traits and discriminating species. Spectral libraries from herbarium specimens represent an untapped resource for generating broad phenomic datasets across space, time, and taxa. We conducted a proof‐of‐concept study using trait data and spectra from herbarium specimens up to 179 yr old,

Simple Girdle Kills Small American Beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) [PDF]
Abstract A simple girdle at waist height will kill small understory American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.). Either removing all the bark from within the girdle or cutting two rings into the wood around the circumference using a small saw will suffice. These methods would likely work on other hardwoods as well. North. J. Appl. For. 21(4)

A hysteretic model predicts a time lag in the response of herbaceous layer variables (e.g., cover, diversity) to decreasing N deposition. To the contrary, virtually all such variables displayed a surprising sensitivity to decreased N. ABSTRACT Increases in nitrogen (N) emissions during the 20th century resulted in the atmospheric deposition of N ...

Foliar resorption of beech and maple along an elevation gradient in a northern hardwood forest
Foliar resorption is a principal nutrient conservation mechanism in terrestrial vegetation that could be sensitive to ongoing changes in climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition.

Long term variation of leaf abundance in a northern hardwood forest
Leaf abundance of trees plays a dominant role in energy, water and nutrient flux of forest ecosystems, in defining the habitat structure of entrained biota and in mediating interspecific competition among tree species.
