Soft Failure Detection, Categorization and Localization

2020 22nd International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2020
Failures in the optical layer can affect the operation of the network as a whole, and the services it supports. The current trend in optical networks is to reduce the operating margins. This means that even relatively slight degradations of the Quality of Transmission (QoT) of the lightpaths can affect the quality of service of the whole network.

Failure detection and identification

IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 1989
Summary: Using the geometric concept of an unobservability subspace, a solution is given to the problem of detecting and identifying control system component failures in linear, time-invariant systems. Conditions are developed for the existence of a causal, linear, time-invariant processor that can detect and uniquely identify a component failure ...

Failure — Origin, Detection, and Prevention

1991
Despite our understanding of the behaviour of materials, failures frequently occur. The sources of these failures include improper design, materials selection, and materials processing, as well as abuse. The engineer must anticipate potential failures and consequently, exercise good design, materials and processing selection, quality control, and ...

Incipient Failure Detection: Incipient Failure Detection in Ball Bearings

1969
Abstract : This document reports the results of an investigation of incipient failure detection in ball bearings by means of acoustic monitoring techniques. The change of acoustic emanation strength with bearing condition was studied to determine if changes within the frequency spectrum monitored would manifest the onset of a bearing failure.

Frame synchronization failure: detection and recovery

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1991
Two problems concerning synchronization for DS1 extended superframe format digital transmission are analyzed. The first problem is to determine how long it will be before synchronization is perceived as being lost given the probability of a bit being in error.

Failure Detection in Large Sparse Systems

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1985
Given a large sparse system (S): \(x(t+1)=Ax(t)+w(t)\), \(y(t)=Cx(t)+v(t)\), where \(x(t)\in {\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and \(y(t)\in {\mathbb{R}}^{\ell}\) are the state and output of S, \(w(t)\in {\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and \(v(t)\in R^{\ell}\) are the state noise and measurement noise in S.

Detecting Corporate Failure

2010
This article introduces definitions of the terms bankruptcy, corporate failure, insolvency, as well as the methods of bankruptcy, and popular economic failure prediction models. We will show that a firm filing for corporate insolvency does not necessarily fail to pay off its financial obligations as they mature.

On detecting bridges causing timing failures

Proceedings 1999 IEEE International Conference on Computer Design: VLSI in Computers and Processors (Cat. No.99CB37040), 2003
High resistance bridges (resistive bridges) are becoming more common. Such bridges cause speed failures. Published experimental results show that current tests are not good at detecting such defects. The following results, pertinent to resolving the above issue, are presented: mechanisms by which bridges cause speed failure; identification of non ...

Planning and Failure Detection

2010
The capacity for planful behavior is one of the major characteristics of an intelligent agent. When acting in realistic environments, however, reasoning about how to achieve one’s goals is complicated significantly, both by the limited perceptions of the agent and the high dynamics of the environment, especially when other intelligent agents are ...
