The Life of Brian … and David: Two Flying‐Foxes' Contribution to Science
This Nature Note examines whether thumb bands and surgically implanted temperature transmitters adversely affect the welfare of free‐living grey‐headed flying‐foxes. Long‐term monitoring and necropsy findings from two males, Brian and David, suggest negligible impacts of these procedures on individual welfare. Although based on only two cases, the rare

Vortices enable the complex aerobatics of peregrine falcons [PDF]
The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) is known for its extremely high speeds during hunting dives or stoop. Here we demonstrate that the superior manoeuvrability of peregrine falcons during stoop is attributed to vortex-dominated flow promoted by their

We found that urban wild turkey had a higher probability of occupying a site if it was farther from roads and trails, closer to water, had more available habitat at finer spatial scales, or had lower mean tree height at larger spatial scales Abstract Once extirpated from most of its range because of overharvest and habitat loss in the early 1900s, the ...

During the 18th and 19th centuries, bird feathers (class: Aves) were harvested from wild populations and sold globally in enormous quantities to meet the rising demand of the fashion industry. Although many laws now prevent similar widescale harvest, there is a paucity of studies on the trade that has continued to occur since the 20th century.

Evaluating the demographic impacts of the highly pathogenic avian influenza panzootic
Our findings demonstrate that the HPAIV panzootic can cause rapid and long‐lasting impacts on the dynamics of long‐lived species. This raises major concerns for the conservation and long‐term viability of the many severely affected long‐lived species worldwide.

Feather Vibration as a Stimulus for Sensing Incipient Separation in Falcon Diving Flight [PDF]
Based on our preceding studies on the aerodynamics of a falcoperegrinus in diving flight along a vertical dam it is known that even when the body shape of the bird is rather streamlined in V-shape some feathers tips may elevate in certain regions of the ...

Use of Citizen Science to Determine Prey Partitioning Between Two Coastal Raptors
In Australia, Eastern Osprey (Pandion haliaetus cristatus) and White‐bellied Sea‐Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) occupy the same ecological niche and are suspected of partitioning prey resources. This study investigated this through evaluating the breadth, overlap and partitioning of diets recorded from social media posts.
