Mercury in feathers of Swedish gyrfalcons,Falco rusticolus, in relation to diet
Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1984The gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) is mainly a resident bird breeding in mountain areas in Fennoscandia. The population (estimated to 300-500 pairs) probably fluctuates according to the presence of willow grouse (Lagopus lagopus) and ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus). Little is known about pollutant levels in Fennoscandian gyrfalcons.

Three mixed-bred raptors (Falco rusticolus x Falco cherrug) from a German falcon breeder were presented with a history of respiratory distress. In one bird a laryngeal stridor was noted, and oral examination revealed an epiglottal swelling. In the other two birds, nasal discharge and sneezing were the main clinical symptoms.

Serum protein electrophoresis reference values in the gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus)
Comparative Clinical Pathology, 2017Blood samples were collected as part of routine clinical examination procedures from 120 clinically normal gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus) during a 4-year period between the months of September and February. Serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) was carried out to establish reference values for the species and to characterize species-specific ...

An adult female gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) was presented with a right-wing droop and weight loss. Radiographic images revealed osteolysis and osseous proliferation of the right shoulder and the mobile vertebra between the notarium and synsacrum. The tentative diagnosis was vertebral osteomyelitis secondary to septic arthritis.

Staged Endoscopic Ventricular Foreign Body Removal in a Gyr Falcon (Falco rusticolus)
Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery, 2009A large ventricular foreign body was identified on radiographs in a captive-bred gyr falcon (Falco rusticolus) that was presented for paresis and swollen abdomen. On endoscopic examination, a large shiny mass was visible in the ventriculus. An ingluviotomy was done, and pieces of the mass, which consisted of a ball of artificial grass fibers, were ...

Avian Cholera in a Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus)
Avian Diseases, 1987A 2-year-old female gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) was being used to hunt ducks in southeastern Wyoming during an outbreak of avian cholera in waterfowl and wild turkeys. While out overnight, the falcon consumed a bird. Within 24 hours the falcon was anorectic, and it was found dead approximately 48 hours following ingestion of wild prey.

Abstract Falconry in the Middle East is an increasingly popular tradition favoring the hunting skills of large falcons including the Gyr falcon ( Falco rusticolus ) and Gyr peregrine hybrids, particularly Falco rusticolus × Falco peregrinus . Radiography allows investigation of avian skeletal disease as well as evaluation of organs of the coelomic ...

Generalized Tetanus in a Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) with Pododermatitis
Avian Diseases, 2016A 2-yr-old male gyrfalcon ( Falco rusticolus ) was presented for severe and generalized muscle spasticity and pododermatitis. The falcon had been treated for pododermatitis over the previous 4 mo. Muscle rigidity and spasms involved the entire bird but were more severe on the right leg. The bird was also tachypneic and hyperthermic at 45 C.

Diving Speeds and Angles of a Gyrfalcon (Falco Rusticolus)
Journal of Experimental Biology, 1998ABSTRACT An optical tracking device recorded the three-dimensional paths of 11 dives by a 1.02 kg gyrfalcon, trained to dive to a falconer. The dives started at altitudes up to 500 m above the ground and were inclined at angles of 17–62 ° from the horizontal.
