Real-Life/Real-Time Elderly Fall Detection with a Triaxial Accelerometer

open access: yesSensors, 2018
The consequences of a fall on an elderly person can be reduced if the accident is attended by medical personnel within the first hour. Independent elderly people often stay alone for long periods of time, being in more risk if they suffer a fall.

Class IIa HDACs forced degradation allows resensitization of oxaliplatin‐resistant FBXW7‐mutated colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
HDAC4 is degraded by the E3 ligase FBXW7. In colorectal cancer, FBXW7 mutations prevent HDAC4 degradation, leading to oxaliplatin resistance. Forced degradation of HDAC4 using a PROTAC compound restores drug sensitivity by resetting the super‐enhancer landscape, reprogramming the epigenetic state of FBXW7‐mutated cells to resemble oxaliplatin ...

„Administrarea împlinirii timpurilor”: spre o filosofie biblică a timpului (partea 1) ["Administering the Fulfillment of Time": Towards a Biblical Philosophy of Time (Part 1)]

open access: yesTheoRhēma, 2015
This article is an introductory study in the philosophy of Time, trying to explore the biblical understanding of Time, as it appears in Genesis 1–3. The author states that Time is defined by God in its relation to Reality (Creation).

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

TCS-Fall: Cross-individual fall detection system based on channel state information and time-continuous stack method

open access: yesDigital Health
Background Falls pose a serious health risk for the elderly, particular for those who are living alone. The utilization of WiFi-based fall detection, employing Channel State Information (CSI), emerges as a promising solution due to its non-intrusive ...

Objective assessment of fall risk in Parkinson's disease using a body-fixed sensor worn for 3 days. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) suffer from a high fall risk. Previous approaches for evaluating fall risk are based on self-report or testing at a given time point and may, therefore, be insufficient to optimally capture fall risk. We tested, for

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

Should UI Benefits Really Fall over Time? [PDF]

open access: yes
The issue of whether unemployment benefits should increase or decrease over the unemployment spell is analyzed in an analytically tractable model allowing moral hazard, adverse selection and hidden savings.

Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...

Emergency department falls: a longitudinal analysis of revisits and hospitalisations between patients who fall and patients who did not fall

open access: yesBMJ Open, 2020
Objective Older adult falls are a national issue comprising 3 million emergency department (ED) visits and significant mortality. We sought to understand whether ED revisits and hospitalisations for fallers differed from non-fall patients through a ...
