Effect of Cilia Orientation in Metachronal Transport of Microparticles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A biomimetic approach is used to generate a directed transversal transportation of micron-sized particles in liquids based on the principle of cilia-type arrays in coordinated motion.

Longer Acting Injectable: Continuous, Linear Release of a Progestin Contraceptive From an Oxidized Porous Silicon Host

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Progestin drugs are loaded into a mesoporous silicon dioxide host by melt‐infiltration. Drugs that decompose at or close to their melting point can be loaded by the addition of cholesterol, which acts as a melting point suppressor. High mass loading of the drug is achieved, and dissolution of the composite is controlled by the nanoscale properties of ...

Medical Materials and Device Innovation: Choosing the Right and Relevant Biological Models

open access: yesAdvanced Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Choosing the right disease model is key to safe, effective medical innovation. When models reflect human biology and clinical needs, they improve translation, reduce risk, and accelerate progress. Advances in 3D tissues, organ‐on‐chip, and humanized systems offer exciting opportunities. With thoughtful selection and clinician input, biomedical research

Integrative Omics Reveals Glutamine Catabolism‐Driven Apoptotic Suppression in Monocytes upon Mechanical Unloading

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This research integrated multi‐omics analysis of bone tissue from HLU and control mice revealed that mechanical unloading suppresses intrinsic apoptosis and augments glutamine (Gln) catabolism in osteoclast lineage cells. The findings highlight pivotal roles for SLC1A5‐mediated Gln metabolism and XIAP/Diablo axis‐mediated apoptosis suppression.

In Bangladeshi Female Cadaver, the Change of Outer Diameter of the Infundibulum of Fallopian Tube in Advancing Age

open access: yesUpdate Dental College Journal, 2018
Context: Problems with the fallopian tubes can lead to infertility. Disease can be defined and measured only in terms of deviation from normal structure.

Mortalin and PINK1/Parkin‐Mediated Mitophagy Represent Ovarian Cancer‐Selective Targets for Drug Development

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ovarian cancer patients with high levels of mortalin protein in their tumors have worse survival. The investigational drug SHetA2 interferes with mortalin's support of mitochondria. The resulting mitochondrial damage causes a process called mitophagy that contributes to how SHetA2 kills cancer cells. Noncancerous cells repair their mitochondria through

Three-dimensional dynamic MR-hysterosalpingography; a new, low invasive, radiation-free and less painful radiological approach to female infertility [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to propose a new method for imaging the uterine cavity and Fallopian tube patency by three-dimensional dynamic magnetic resonance hysterosalpingography (3D dMR-HSG) and to analyse if, by using a higher viscosity ...
