A spectral comparison of lightning discharge plasma and laser-induced air plasma
The high time-resolved spectrum of natural lightning is obtained by a slitless spectrograph. The spectrum of natural lightning is compared to the spectrum of laser-induced air plasma.

Laser cooling with ultrafast pulse trains [PDF]
We propose a new laser cooling method for atomic species whose level structure makes traditional laser cooling difficult. For instance, laser cooling of hydrogen requires vacuum-ultraviolet laser light, while multielectron atoms need laser light at many widely separated frequencies.

Normal Gas-Rich Galaxies in the Far-Infrared: The Legacy of ISOPHOT [PDF]
Following on from IRAS, the ISOPHOT instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) has provided a huge advancement in our knowledge of the phenomenology of the far-infrared (FIR) emission of normal galaxies and the underlying physical processes.

Realizing 3D Spectral Imaging in the Far-Infrared: FIFI LS [PDF]
We present a progress report on the design and construction of the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer (FIFI LS) for the SOFIA airborne observatory. The design of the instrument is driven by the goal of maximizing observing efficiency, especially for observations of faint, extragalactic objects.

The interstellar gas seen in the mid- and far-infrared: The promise of SPICA Space Telescope [PDF]
The mid- and far-IR spectral ranges are critical windows to characterize the physical and chemical processes that transform the interstellar gas and dust into stars and planets. Sources in the earliest phases of star formation and in the latest stages of stellar evolution release most of their energy at these wavelengths.

Longitudinal Laser Shaping in Laser Wakefield Accelerators [PDF]
We study the energetics of wake excitation during the laser-plasma interaction in application to laser wakefield accelerators. We find that both the wake amplitude and the accelerating efficiency (transformer ratio) can be maximized by properly shaping the longitudinal profile of the driving laser pulse.

Hybrid (Oscillator-Amplifier) Free Electron Laser and New Proposals
The present work analyses a hybrid free electron laser (FEL) scheme where the oscillator is based on a radiation source operating with a slow-wave guiding structure as, for instance, a Cerenkov FEL or a Smith–Purcell FEL.

Resolving debris discs in the far-infrared: early highlights from the DEBRIS survey [PDF]
We present results from the earliest observations of DEBRIS, a Herschel Key Programme to conduct a volume- and flux-limited survey for debris discs in A-type through M-type stars. PACS images (from chop/nod or scan-mode observations) at 100 and 160 micron are presented toward two A-type stars and one F-type star: beta Leo, beta UMa and eta Corvi.
