Limitations of ground based near and far infrared astronomy
Infrared Physics, 1975Abstract The possibilities of ground based infrared astronomy are discussed. It is shown that telescopes used up to now are not optimized and that the Diffraction Limited Detectivity conditions (DLD) cannot be reached, in the near infrared, by the larger telescopes. The maximum useful diameters for near i.r. and far i.r.

An array photometer for air-borne far infrared astronomy
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1985We describe here a far-infrared photometer capable of detecting simultaneously in three bands in the region 20–120 microns, each band having an array of 3 or 4 photoconductive detectors. We present and discuss its laboratory performance and the results obtained on the planet Venus during an air-borne observational programme using a 32.5 cm telescope ...

A Far-Infrared Heterodyne Spectrometer for Airborne Astronomy
1988The design and construction of a novel heterodyne spectrometer for airborne astronomy in the 50 µm - 200 µm wavelength range is described. along with laboratory measurements of its performance. A bulk, extrinsic Ge:Ga photoconductor is used as the mixer.

Cryogenic detectors for infrared astronomy: the Single Aperture Far-InfraRed (SAFIR) Observatory
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2004Abstract The development of a large, far-infrared telescope in space has taken on a new urgency with breakthroughs in detector technology and recognition of the fundamental importance of the far-infrared spectral region to questions ranging from cosmology to our own Solar system.

A scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer for far-infrared balloon astronomy
Infrared Physics, 1978Abstract Design and performance details of a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer developed for far-infrared balloon astronomy are presented. Scanning is achieved mechanically by a parallel spring arrangement and plate spacing is measured by capacitance micrometry.

Balloon-Borne Telescopes for Far-Infrared Astronomy
1977I would like to present some of the background and current activity in balloon-borne infrared astronomy, to examine a number of astronomical objectives in terms of their technical requirements, to describe some of the unique characteristics of ballooning techniques, and to illustrate how the objectives and techniques are mated with some specific ...

Lumped element kinetic inductance detectors for far-infrared astronomy
SPIE Proceedings, 2008We describe a new type of FIR detector based on lumped element superconducting resonators (LEKIDs). Thesedevices can act as distributed FIR radiation absorbers without the need for an additional coupling structure. In addition, these devices can be integrated into a compact filled array geometry with high filling factor.

Bandpass interference filters for very far infrared astronomy
Infrared Physics, 1980Abstract Three bandpass filters have been constructed for use with a 0.3K bolometer. The center frequencies and bandwidths of the filters are chosen to correspond with the 1, 2 and 3 mm atmospheric windows. The filters are formed of resonant metallic grids separated by air spacers.

Atmospheric windows and broad band photometry in far infrared astronomy
Infrared Physics, 1974Abstract The far infrared atmospheric windows between 30 cm −1 and 5 cm −1 have been investigated during many months of observations at the Alpine Station of Testa Grigia (3500 m a.s.l.). The seasonal and diurnal variation of the atmospheric transmittance for each window have been measured.

A 102-cm Balloon-Borne Telescope for Far-Infrared Astronomy
Optical Engineering, 1977The Center for Astrophysics-University of Arizona balloon-borne, inertially-guided, 102 cm telescope was designed to perform photometry and high resolution mapping of far-infrared (40-250 micron) celestial sources. To date the telescope has now been flown and successfully recovered a total of ten times.
