Morpho‐functional analyses of the jaw apparatus in the Blue‐and‐yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna, Psittaciformes, Aves): Adaptations to feeding behavior

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Macaws are renowned for processing dry, mechanically resistant fruits, yet the species‐level anatomical and functional correlates of this performance remain incompletely resolved. We examined the feeding apparatus of the Blue‐and‐yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) using an integrated approach that combines osteology, myology, and bite‐force estimates

Oldest well‐preserved euprimate petrosal, from the early Eocene of India (Vastan Lignite Mine, Gujarat)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract An exquisitely preserved, isolated partial petrosal with associated fragmentary stapes is described from the Vastan Lignite Mine (Gujarat, India), dated to the early Eocene (~54.5 Ma). Several anatomical traits (e.g., large petrosal plate; posterolateral entry of the internal carotid artery to the tympanic cavity; bony tubes surrounding the ...

Fascicle differentiation of upper extremity nerves on high-resolution ultrasound with multimodal microscopic verification

open access: yesScientific Reports
This study aimed to compare the fascicular anatomy of upper limb nerves visualized using in situ high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) with ex vivo imaging modalities, namely, magnetic resonance microscopy (MRM), histological cross-sections (HCS), and ...

Quantitative muscle architecture in large carnivorous marsupials (Marsupialia: Dasyuridae) and links to substrate use and prey processing

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The Dasyurid species Sarcophilus harrisii, Dasyurus maculatus, and Dasyurus viverrinus, occupying diverse ecological niches and forming a guild structure in Tasmania, provide a basis for examining the roles of various forelimb muscle groups in prey capture and locomotion.

Scoping literature review: Comparing MRI tractography methods for optic radiation analysis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Accurate tractography mapping of the optic radiations is essential to avoiding post‐operative visual field deficits in patients undergoing temporal lobe surgery. This literature review highlights the current landscape of MRI tractography methods that are used to delineate the optic radiations (ORs), with a particular focus on the anterior ...

Elephant trunk tip musculature reflects species differences in grasping behavior

open access: yesCommunications Biology
Elephants use their trunks, muscular hydrostats, to perform a plethora of tasks. Trunk tip morphology as well as grasping behavior differ between elephant species.

Developmental morphology of claspers and clasper‐glands during maturation in Potamotrygon wallacei (Chondrichthyes: Potamotrygoninae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The claspers are the copulatory organs in male elasmobranchs, responsible for directing the semen into the female cloaca (C). However, the microscopic morphology of the claspers remains poorly understood. This study describes the morphology of the claspers and clasper glands (CGs) of cururu stingray (Potamotrygon wallacei) at different ...

Three‐dimensional digital analysis of musteloid masticatory muscle architecture

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Musteloids span an enormous breadth of dietary modes within a single superfamily. In this study, we utilize digital dissection techniques to reconstruct the internal 3D anatomy of muscles within the musteloid feeding apparatus, and explore how dietary specializations might alter the size, orientation, and curvature of fascicles therein.

In vivopassive mechanical behaviour of muscle fascicles and tendons in human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units

open access: yes, 2011
Ultrasound imaging was used to measure the length of muscle fascicles in human gastrocnemius muscles while the muscle was passively lengthened and shortened by moving the ankle. In some subjects the muscle belly 'buckled' at short lengths.
