Proof-of-Principle Experiments for Fast Ignition and the Fast Ignition Realization Experiment

Fusion Science and Technology, 2006
This paper introduces the next generation of fast ignition research facilities now under construction and describes in detail the Japanese project Fast Ignition Realization Experiment (FIREX-I) and its proposed follow-up, FIREX-II. Both the facilities and their scientific objectives are presented.

Proton Fast Ignition

Fusion Science and Technology, 2006
Fast ignition by a laser-generated, ballistically focused proton plasma jet is a more recently proposed alternative to the original concept of fast ignition by a laser-generated beam of relativisti...

Ignition threshold in cylindrical fast ignition targets

Physics of Plasmas, 2019
In this paper, the ignition stage of heavy ion driven fast ignition is evaluated numerically by using a quasi-1D model. Recently, the minimum value of the fuel areal density in cylindrical fast ignition was reported by Ramis and Meyer-ter-Vehn [Laser Part. Beams 32, 41–47(2014)].

Diagnostics for fast ignition science (invited)

Review of Scientific Instruments, 2008
The ignition concept for electron fast ignition inertial confinement fusion requires sufficient energy be transferred from an ∼20 ps laser pulse to the compressed fuel via approximately MeV electrons. We have assembled a suite of diagnostics to characterize such transfer, simultaneously fielding absolutely calibrated extreme ultraviolet multilayer ...

Improvement of ignition and burning target design for fast ignition scheme

Nuclear Fusion, 2021
For the fast ignition scheme of laser fusion, a highly compressed fuel core is necessary using a cone-inserted spherical solid target. We design an optimal compression method with a multistep laser pulse shape using a 2-D radiation hydrodynamics simulation.

Alfvén limit in fast ignition

Physical Review E, 2004
Fast ignition inertial confinement fusion relies on rapidly heating the compressed fuel to ignition using a laser-generated electron beam. The current required far exceeds the Alfvén limit, so it can only propagate while the plasma provides a nearly coincident return current.
