HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) standard is ready to be launched for consumer electronics. With better coding efficiency, the coding complexity is high. We propose a fast CU (Coding Unit) depth decision algorithm based on SKIP mode information in the neighboring block to early terminate the CU splitting.

The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard can achieve approximately 50% bit-rate reduction that compares with H.264. To enhance intra coding efficiency in HEVC, an increase in the number of intra modes from 9 to 35 is adopted. However, this technique drastically increases computational complexity of intra mode selection.
