Adjusting for Fat-Free Mass in Metabolic Studies
Hormone and Metabolic Research, 2002in a recent publication, Eriksson et al. [1] explored the relationship between size at birth and resting metabolic rate and body composition in adulthood in a cohort of over 300 men and women. They reported an unexpected finding that people of both sexes who had a low birth weight also had a higher metabolic activity per unit muscle tissue.

Factors that alter body fat, body mass, and fat-free mass in pediatric obesity
Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2002The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of exercise treatment programs on changes in body mass, fat-free mass, and body fat in obese children and adolescents.By using the meta-analytic approach, studies that met the following criteria were included in our analyses: 1) at least six subjects per group; 2) subject groups consisting of ...

Changes in fat mass and fat-free mass during the adiposity rebound: FLAME study
International Journal of Pediatric Obesity, 2011To determine the changes in body composition from 3 to 7 years of age in children undergoing adiposity rebound (AR) at different ages.Body composition was measured bi-annually by bioelectrical impedance in 229 children from a birth cohort. Age at AR was calculated from changes in weight and height velocity over time. Early AR was defined as < 6.1 years

A greater fat-free mass (FFM) is purported to be associated with protective effects on insulin resistance (IR). However, recent studies suggested negative associations between FFM and IR.(1) To explore the direction of the association between FFM and IR in a large heterogeneous sample after controlling for confounding factors.

Comparison of fat-free mass and body fat in Swiss and American adults
Nutrition, 2005No current studies have compared North American with European body composition parameters, i.e., fat-free mass (FFM), body fat (BF), and percentage of BF (%BF) in large populations. This study compared FFM, BF, and %BF values derived from two bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) equations (Geneva and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey ...

Fat and fat-free mass in Nepalese children: an assessment of nutritional status
European Journal of Pediatrics, 2009The aims of the present study were to determine the body composition and to assess the nutritional status on the basis of body composition parameters in Nepalese children. Body fat percentage (BF%), fat mass (FM), and fat-free mass (FFM) of 1,988 (1,016 boys and 972 girls) Nepalese children aged 6 to 10 years were calculated from triceps and ...
