An analysis of lifejacket wear, environmental factors, and casualty activity on marine accident fatality rates [PDF]

open access: yesSafety Science, 2019
Abstract Drowning and fatalities at sea are a large concern globally. In the UK, many sea rescues are performed by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and this study investigates 6 years’ worth of their rescue data to better understand causation of drowning and what makes an incident at sea high risk.

The 2025 Kamchatka Earthquake and Tsunami: Cascading Impacts and Risks to Japan

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT On July 29th, 2025, a large earthquake (Mw 8.8) occurred near the Kamchatka Peninsula. This event caused a tsunami that reached Japan's Pacific coast, even though the source was far away. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of earthquakes and tsunamis and discuss how they relate to the recurrence possibility and risk in Japan.

Multi‐Hazard Shaking‐Tsunami Fatality Risk Estimation for Coastal Communities

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study develops a multi‐hazard fatality risk model for a coastal community (Tofino) on Vancouver Island, Canada, subjected to earthquake‐tsunami threats from the Cascadia subduction megathrust events. The model incorporates variable population distributions and uncertain fatality rate models, in addition to other key model components, such

Unexpected Casualty: The Accidental Fatality of a Glass Injury

open access: yesCureus
Fatal sharp-cut injuries are often associated with violent acts and are typically considered homicidal in nature. This case report presents a rare instance of an accidental fatality caused by glass, initially suspected as a homicide due to the injury pattern and preliminary crime scene scenario.

A Bayesian Analysis of Accidental Dwelling Fire Incidence, Injury, and Fatality in the Greater Manchester Area

open access: yesFire and Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The relationship between accidental dwelling fire incidence and fire injury and fatality was examined using a Bayesian model to estimate the probability of a fire injury or fatality resulting from an accidental dwelling fire incidence under different circumstances of fire incidence (type of accidental dwelling fire, dwelling occupancy type ...

A GIS-based approach for earthquake loss estimation based on the immediate extraction of damaged buildings

open access: yesGeomatics, Natural Hazards & Risk, 2017
With the remote sensing technology is possible to predict estimations of the expected number of killed or injured people. In this study, a loss estimation method is proposed by combining data from remote sensing technology and geographic information ...

Comparing treatment outcomes of prolonged exposure therapy across trauma type and veteran status

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, EarlyView.
Abstract This retrospective cohort study evaluated the effectiveness of prolonged exposure therapy (PE) across trauma types (combat, terror, civilian) and veteran status (military veterans vs. civilians) in a real‐world clinical setting. We hypothesized that individuals who experienced combat‐ and terror‐related trauma would have higher baseline ...

Intangible drivers of tolerance shape human–elephant coexistence in Southwest China

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Southwest China is home to a small but rapidly expanding population of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), whose growth has intensified conflicts with people living in shared landscapes. These conflicts result in substantial economic losses and occasional human casualties. This coexistence paradox—where conservation success leads to significant
