Short Fatigue Cracks

1983
Short fatigue cracks are the linkage of the initiation stage to the long crack growth which can be described by linear elastic fracture mechanics. Because some cracks can initiate then cease to grow, short cracks are important in the definition of fatigue limits.

Evaluation of Fatigue Cracking

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 1997
The continuous growth of damage from fatigue cracking is described as a two-stage process of crack initiation and crack propagation. The crack-initiation stage can be characterized by conventional laboratory fatigue tests. The crack-propagation stage is described using the Paris-Erdogan phenomenological law.

Fatigue Crack Thresholds

1996
Abstract This article describes the types of closure mechanisms, including plasticity-induced, roughness-induced, oxide-induced, and fretting-debris-induced. It discusses test techniques used to establish a valid threshold value for aluminum alloy crack growth thresholds, steel crack growth thresholds, and titanium alloy crack growth ...

The initial fatigue crack

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1957
Abstract A discussion is given of the formation of persistent slip bands during cyclic stressing and their development into fatigue cracks. In copper and in aluminium at low temperatures fatigue cracks appear to be formed in this way; at room temperature in aluminium they may form also along grain boundaries.

Fatigue Crack Growth

1996
Metal fatigue is a major cause for failure of mechanical and structural components. We review the fracture mechanics of fatigue and Paris-Erdogan law for the mean behavior. After a consideration of experimental data reported by Virkler et al. (1979), we propose a continuous semimarkov process to model crack growth.

Fatigue Crack Growth

1997
As discussed in Chapter 2, the traditional approach to estimate the total life of a structural part is to use the S—N diagram (alternating stress, S, versus the total number of cycles to failure, N). This diagram can be constructed by conducting several laboratory tests on standard specimens subjected to low amplitude fluctuating loads simulating the ...

Sizing of Fatigue Cracks

2018
AE technique has been widely applied to detect and locate fatigue cracks in metallic structures. However, it is still a challenging task to accurately quantify the size of a fatigue crack using AE technique (Gagar et al., Smart Mater Struct 23(10):105033, 2014).

Fatigue Crack Growth

2016
Fatigue in materials subjected to repeated cyclic loading can be defined as a progressive failure due to crack initiation (stage I), crack growth (stage II), and crack propagation (stage III) or instability stage. For instance, crack initiation of crack-free solids may be characterized by fatigue crack nuclei due to dislocation motion, which generates ...

Fatigue crack propagation

1982
The determination of the fatigue crack propagation curve is an essential part of the fracture mechanics design approach. Residual strength calculation procedures have obvious shortcomings, but the prediction of fatigue crack propagation characteristics is even less accurate, despite the vast amount of research that has been done on this subject.

Fatigue Crack Propagation

2014
Fatigue failure is caused by the initiation of micro cracks from small defects in a material, followed by their propagation resulting in the formation of macro cracks, where the magnitude of applied stress may be lower than the yielding stress but the load is repeatedly applied to the material.
