Journal of Applied Mechanics, 2000By using the crack analogue model of rigid flat-ended contact, crack initiation in fretting fatigue is analyzed. Abstract A discussion is given of the formation of persistent slip bands during cyclic stressing and their development into fatigue cracks. In copper and in aluminium at low temperatures fatigue cracks appear to be formed in this way; at room temperature in aluminium they may form also along grain boundaries.

Fatigue Crack Initiation with Creep
1982Experimental observations of the micromechanics theory of fatigue crack initiation of Lin and Ito are reviewed. This theory is shown to be applicable also for time-dependent fatigue. An aluminum polycrystal subject to cyclic tension and compression is considered.
