A fatigue crack propagation model

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1984
Abstract A model for fatigue crack propagation has been developed which incorporates mechanical, cyclic and fatigue properties as well as a length parameter. The latter can be associated with the microstructure of the material. The fatigue failure criterion is based on a measure of the dissipated plastic strain energy.

On Normalized Fatigue Crack Growth Modeling

Volume 2A: Structures, Safety, and Reliability, 2020
Abstract Modeling of fatigue crack growth plays a key role in risk informed inspection and maintenance planning for fatigue sensitive structural details. Probabilistic models must be available for observable fatigue performances such as crack length and depth, as a function of time.

Modeling Environment-Assisted Fatigue Crack Propagation

2008
Predicting fatigue crack growth in metals under random loadings remains difficult since fatigue crack growth is very sensitive to load history. Load history effect in fatigue is known for decades to stem from plastic deformation in the vicinity of the crack tip.

Modeling Corrosion Fatigue Crack Propagation

CORROSION 2001, 2001
Abstract A mathematical model is proposed for modeling the chemistry and the potential distribution in a corrosion fatigue crack, along with the crack propagation rate, in sensitized stainless steel in boiling water reactor (BWR) coolant environments.

A Dislocation Model for Fatigue Crack Initiation

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1981
The slip band formed in a grain on the material surface is a preferential site for crack initiation during low strain fatigue of polycrystalline metals. The forward and reverse plastic flow within the slip band is modeled in the present study by dislocations with different signs moving on two closely located layers, and it is assumed that their ...

Modelling fatigue crack initiation life

International Journal of Fatigue, 1993
Abstract An accurate formula for the fatigue crack initiation (FCl) life, correlating it with the geometry of notched speciments, the cyclic loading conditions, the behaviour of metals and the tension overloading effect, has been developed based on the hypothesis of the widely used local strain approach, and checked by test results on the FCl life of

A model for fatigue crack propagation

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1975
Abstract A model for fatigue crack propagation is presented which incorporates low cycle fatigue, mechanical properties and a microstructurally-associated process zone. Comparison of the model to published date for 4340 (hard and soft), a series of TRIP steels, Ti-6A1-4V, 2024-T6 and 300 grade maraging steel shows good agreement.

Modeling Fatigue Crack Growth

2009
Abstract Understanding fatigue crack growth is critical for the safe operation of many structural components. This article reviews the standard fracture mechanics and methods to determine the crack growth rate for a material and loading condition experimentally.

Micromechanical modeling of short fatigue cracks

Current Opinion in Solid State and Materials Science, 2014
Abstract This paper gives an overview over the micromechanical modeling approaches of short fatigue cracks. Until now many approaches have been presented in the literature, which differ significantly in their degree of complexity ranging from simple empirical or analytical models to complex models based on numerical solutions.

Modelling of Fatigue Crack Growth

1989
Fatigue crack growth is presently being treated almost exclusively within the theoretical framework of fracture mechanics. This trend is following the pioneering work of Paris and his co-workers, which date back some 25 years (1). However, at that time several other parameters than K, the stress intensity factor, were being used to correlate fatigue ...
