A fatigue crack growth threshold
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1992Abstract Fatigue crack growth (FCG) threshold has been determined on Ti6A14V, Al 7475-T7351, quenched and tempered steel 24CrMo4 as well as on the Ni-base alloys Inconel 617 and Nicrofer 5219 Nb. The main objective of the studies was to prove the transferability of the experimentally determined FCG threshold to service type fatigue loading.

On crack-crack interaction and coalescence in fatigue
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1982Abstract The effect of crack-crack interaction and coalescence in fatigue was studied for a single pair of cracks analytically and for multi-cracks based on real microstructure variations by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Crack-crack interaction and coalescence lower the mean fatigue lifetime.

Abstract A loading stage for the scanning electron microscope has been used in conjunction with the stereoimaging technique to study fatigue crack closure for a center notched specimen of an aluminum alloy. The results are compared to similar measurements from single edge notched specimens of the same alloy and other materials.

Short fatigue cracks are the linkage of the initiation stage to the long crack growth which can be described by linear elastic fracture mechanics. Because some cracks can initiate then cease to grow, short cracks are important in the definition of fatigue limits.
