An experimental and finite element study of the low-cycle fatigue failure of a galvanised steel lighting column [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper presents the results of a low-cycle fatigue test on a lighting column. The wind induced vibration phenomena responsible for low cycle fatigue in such structures is discussed and the failure mechanism is examined.

Multi-physics information-integrated neural network for fatigue life prediction of additively manufactured Hastelloy X superalloy

open access: yesVirtual and Physical Prototyping
The inherent ‘black-box’ characteristic of neural networks renders the physical interpretability of fatigue life prediction challenging, resulting in physically inconsistent prediction results.

Slip Localization Intensification Mediated by Grain Boundary Sliding in a Polycrystalline Nickel‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The temperature dependence of fatigue behavior in nickel‐based superalloys is investigated through high‐resolution measurements of plastic localization. While increasing temperature reduces localization and enhances fatigue performance in René 88DT, Inconel 718 exhibits a sharp degradation at intermediate temperature due to intensified slip ...

Compression-compression fatigue life prediction model of T300/69 laminates under edge impact

open access: yesJixie qiangdu
After low-velocity impact at the edge, delamination and matrix extrusion occur inside the composite laminates, which will have a serious impact on the safe use and life of the composite laminates. Therefore, it is of practical engineering significance to

Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth in Nanocrystalline Ni at Multiple Length‐Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of miniaturized in situ SEM fatigue setup and resultant fatigue crack growth data for nanocrystalline Ni. The presented study focuses on the analysis of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in focused ion beam‐notched microcantilevers prepared from nanocrystalline (NC) Ni as a model material.

Optimization of fatigue life of the seismic vibrator baseplate considering the coupling effect of welding residual stress

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal
The seismic vibrator baseplate (SVB) is a welded structure. Ignoring welding residual stress (WRS) and only considering cyclic stress can decrease the accuracy of fatigue life assessments.

Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.

Simulation of fatigue behaviour in fusion welded 2024-T351 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A model has been developed to predict short crack fatigue life in the fusion zone of Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welded 2024-T351, based on the observed propensity for complex, multiple cracking processes in this region.

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Experimental Characterization and Constitutive Modeling of the Effect of Prior Inelastic Strain on the Viscoplastic Behavior of AD730 at 700 °C

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that superalloys used in aircraft engine disks become much more prone to deformation at high temperatures if they have been strained during manufacturing. This effect increases with the level of prior strain but eventually reaches a limit.
