Deep Learning Pipeline for the Identification of Ground Beetles (Carabidae) in New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 3, September 2026.
The identification of invertebrates is often difficult and time‐consuming because of their high abundance and diversity. This limits the use of invertebrates in environmental monitoring and conservation. However, computer vision approaches combined with deep learning models offer a range of benefits to insect conservation, particularly for image‐based ...

Modulating Hunting Atmospheres: Mud and Material Flows Beyond the Kill

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 128, Issue 3, Page 629-639, September 2026.
ABSTRACT This article argues that hunting is not a bounded event but a materially redistributed atmosphere that extends beyond the kill and across field, truck, clothing, and home. Drawing on long‐term ethnographic fieldwork with wild boar hunters in Uruguay, I show how mud, odors, blood, and bodily residues carry the sensory, affective, and material ...

Activity and Habitat Selection of an Apex Predator in Semi‐Arid Rangeland Production Areas: Implications for Optimising Management Efforts

open access: yesEcological Management &Restoration, Volume 27, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT In the complex interplay between agriculture and wildlife, free‐living predators pose a unique set of challenges. In western New South Wales (NSW), free‐living canids (legislatively defined as ‘wild dogs’; Canis familiaris; which currently includes dingoes, feral modern dogs and their hybrids) are managed due to their impacts on livestock ...

Comparative evaluation of the attractiveness of new polyethylene screens versus West African tiny target for the control of tsetse flies

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 40, Issue 3, Page 489-497, September 2026.
The material has no significant difference in captures (non‐shiny cotton‐polyester screens vs. the shiny polyethylene screens), but the vertical screen attracted significantly more G. tachinoides for each type of material. Full white horizontal screen was significantly lower than the reference WATT.
