Numerical investigation into combined global and local hydroelastic response in a large container ship based on two-way coupled CFD and FEA

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Technology, 2019
In this study, for efficient safety assessment of a ship’s hull girder subjected to a combination of the global vertical bending moment (VBM) and the local double-bottom bending moment (DBM), a numerical method based on a coupled computational fluid ...

In Vivo Skin 3‐D Surface Reconstruction and Wrinkle Depth Estimation Using Handheld High Resolution Tactile Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A compact handheld GelSight probe reconstructs in vivo 3‐D skin topography with micron‐level precision using a custom elastic gel and a learning‐based surface normal to height map pipeline. The device quantifies wrinkle depth across various body locations and detects changes in wrinkle depth following moisturizer application.

Efficient FORM-based extreme value prediction of nonlinear ship loads with an application of reduced-order model for coupled CFD and FEA

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Technology, 2019
In this paper, a method for predicting the extreme value distribution of the vertical bending moment (VBM) in a ship under a given short-term sea state is presented. To predict the extreme value distribution of the VBM, the first-order reliability method

Fossils and FEA [PDF]

open access: yesMechanical Engineering, 2012
This article explores the application of finite element analysis (FEA) in studying the evolution of animals, including dinosaurs. Scientists have applied the method to determine how dinosaurs originally looked and functioned, and how they and other animals changed and evolved through the years.

Adaptive Twisting Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces torque‐controlled twisting metamaterials as a transformative platform for adaptive crashworthiness. By combining multiscale predictive modeling with experimental validation on additively manufactured gyroids, it demonstrates tunable stiffness, collapse stress, and energy absorption.

Analytical modeling of open-Circuit air-Gap field distributions in multisegment and multilayer interior permanent-magnet machines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present a simple lumped magnetic circuit model for interior permanent-magnet (IPM) machines with multisegment and multilayer permanent magnets. We derived analytically the open-circuit air-gap field distribution, average air-gap flux density, and ...

Correlated Dual‐Gradient Electrodes Enabling Spatially Synchronized Sulfur Redox in High‐Mass‐Loading Li–S Batteries Under High Current Densities

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Coupling a dual‐gradient carbonized framework with Fe2O3/Fe‐N‐C catalytic sites enables spatially synchronized sulfur redox across the entire electrode thickness in high‐mass‐loading Li–S batteries. This synergistic structural–catalytic design effectively mitigates concentration, ohmic, and electrochemical polarization, thereby achieving high‐capacity ...
