No effect of trait anxiety on differential fear conditioning or fear generalization
Biological Psychology, 2013Previous studies have shown that individuals with anxiety disorders exhibit deficits in fear inhibition and excessive generalization of fear, but little data exist on individuals at risk from these disorders. The present study examined the role of trait anxiety in the acquisition and generalization of fear in 126 healthy participants selected on the ...

The ontogeny of fear-potentiated startle: Effects of earlier-acquired fear memories.
Behavioral Neuroscience, 2007Research has shown that learned fear emerges in a response-specific sequence. For example, freezing is observed at a younger age than is potentiated startle (P. Hunt & B. A. Campbell, 1997). The present study shows that the age at which a specific learned fear response emerges is influenced by the animal's early experiences.

Fear of Failure and the Zeigarnik Effect
Psychological Reports, 1988The present study was a partial replication of one by Atkinson in 1953 and an attempt to assess the effect of strength of fear-of-failure motivation on recall of interrupted and completed tasks. 81 freshman men enrolled in introductory psychology classes were administered the Thematic Apperception Test under typical “neutral” conditions.

Interaction of Fear Effects with Habit Strength
Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1970Four groups of rats received 0, 3, 6 or 9 days of overtraining after having reached stable performance on a continuous reinforcement bar pressing schedule. Half the subjects in each group had previously been designated emotionally reactive or non-reactive in terms of defecation rates in an open-field test. Following training, there were four test days

Social Forces, 2005
This article extends Simpson's (2003) research on sex differences in social dilemmas. To test the hypotheses that men defect in response to greed and women to fear, Simpson created Fear and Greed Dilemmas, but experiments using these games supported the greed hypothesis only.

Effects of Exercise on Pavlovian Fear Conditioning.
Behavioral Neuroscience, 2004Exercise promotes multiple changes in hippocampal morphology and should, as a result, alter behavioral function. The present experiment investigated the effect of exercise on learning using contextual and auditory Pavlovian fear conditioning. Rats remained inactive or voluntarily exercised (VX) for 30 days, after which they received auditory-cued fear ...

Smoker's Recall of Fear Appeal Imagery: Examining the Effect of Fear Intensity and Fear Type
Australasian Marketing Journal, 2015This study examines the effect of fear intensity and type of fear on smokers’ recall of fear-based graphic stimuli. A 2 × 2 factorial design manipulates fear intensity (high vs. low) and fear type (physical vs. social). Results show high intensity messages promote superior recall, with recall heightening when the message also depicts physical harm ...

The purpose of this research was to determine if fear is subject to the contrast effect that pervades psychophysical and other psychological phenomena. A contrast is said to occur when the judgement of a target stimulus is inversely related to the stimulus that preceded it; hence, it was expected that the response to a fearful stimulus should be ...

AbstractInvestigated the effects of fear arousal and sidedness variables on compliance with a dietary regimen.Experiments involved 202 women volunteers who were 10 per cent or more overweight, and aged 20‐60 years. Experiment 1 involved a 3 (low, medium, high fear) × 2 (single, multiple exposure to fear message) × 2 (one‐, two‐sided communication ...
