Survival of fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci in storm drain sediment [PDF]

open access: yesWater Research, 1991
Abstract This study defined major factors influencing the survival of the bacterial indicators, fecal coliforms (FC) and fecal streptococci (FS), in separate storm drain sediments during dry weather periods. FC and FS abilities to survive were determined by field sampling and experimental treatments of laboratory stream models.

Pathogenic Escherichia coli Virulome in Top Soil Improvers and Irrigation Waters Devoted to Leafy Vegetable Production: Hazard Assessment From a Case Study in Italy

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
Escherichia coli pathotype virulotyping to assess if combined top soil improver and water inputs would potentially lead to hybrid strains with shuffled virulence features in ready‐to‐eat vegetables. This is to support the transition toward safe and sustainable food production systems.

Using observed bacteria concentration and modeled transit time under an analytical framework to estimate overall removal rate of fecal coliform in an estuary [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Abundance of fecal coliform (FC) is widely used to indicate the potential presence of pathogens, the No.1 cause of water impairments in the U.S. Despite extensive monitoring efforts, assessing and modeling FC pollution still faces challenges, largely owing to the uncertainties in estimation of overall removal rate (K).

Surface Contamination of Beef Carcasses by Fecal Coliforms

open access: yesJournal of Food Protection, 1991
A total of 18 half-carcasses was selected at random in each of three different meat processing establishments. Samples were taken by excision at seven sites on each half-carcass at the end of four processing sectors, from the dressing of the carcass to the packaging of boneless beef, and the fecal coliform counts per cm2 were subsequently determined. A

A review of the development and implementation of the critical source area concept: A reflection of Andrew Sharpley's role in improving water quality

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Quality, EarlyView.
Abstract Critical source areas (CSAs) are small areas of a field, farm, or catchment that account for most contaminant loss by having both a high contaminant availability and transport potential. Most work on CSAs has focused on phosphorus (P), largely through the work in the 1990s initiated by Dr.

Phenolic characterization and nutraceutical evaluation of by‐products from different globe artichoke cultivars

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND The globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus L.) is extensively cultivated in the Mediterranean region, with Italy being a leading producer. Industrial processing of artichoke plants generates substantial amounts of residual materials, which are discarded annually.

Simulating coliform transport and decay from 3D hydrodynamics model and in situ observation in Nice area [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
In coastal area, raw wastewater can be directly discharged in the sea during extreme rain events or failure of the sewage network. The highly urbanized and touristic area of Nice is directly exposed to this risk. In order to protect the bathing population and to apply the European regulation (DCE, 2000), Nice municipality has decided to work on a ...
