Feed restriction and welfare in domestic birds.
2006This chapter will mainly focus on the effects of feed restriction on the welfare of the broiler breeder chicken, where most of the research on feed restriction has been carried out. The effects of short- and long-term feed restriction and food deprivation on welfare in other types of domestic birds will also be discussed where relevant.

Time-Restricted Feeding (16/8)
Topics in Clinical NutritionThis study aimed to investigate the effects of 8-hour time-restricted feeding (TRF) on body weight, biochemical parameters, diet quality, and eating behavior in overweight females. In the TRF group, there was a statistically significant decrease in body weight, body mass index, and waist and hip circumference (P < .05).

AbstractIt is common practice to control the feed consumption, and therefore the energy intake, of the parents of commercial broilers and ducks but not turkeys. Genetic selection for high rates of body weight gain results in correlated increases in ovulation rate and disrupted production of eggs with sound shells suitable for hatching. Feed restriction

In addition to diet quality and quantity, the "timing" of food intake recently emerged as a third key parameter in nutritional and metabolic health. The link between nutrition timing and metabolic homeostasis is in part due to the regulation of daily feeding:fasting cycles and metabolic pathways by the circadian clock.

Rat Neutrophil Phagocytosis Following Feed Restriction
Comparative Clinical Pathology, 2002Migration to zymozan and spontaneous migration of neutrophils, ingestion of small hydrophilic particles (HEMA) or large cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium salts (NBT) were investigated in rats with defined food restriction; animals fed ad libitum served as controls. All animals of a specific-pathogen-free grade were

Feeding the Preterm Neonate with Intrauterine Growth Restriction
2013Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is the failure to achieve the genetically predetermined growth potential and may be caused by fetal, maternal, placental, and external factors. IUGR is associated with significant perinatal mortality and morbidity and adverse long-term outcomes, in preterm, especially extremely preterm infants with gestation under

Metabolic Responses to Intracerebroventricular Leptin and Restricted Feeding
Physiology & Behavior, 1998Leptin is a hormone secreted by adipocytes, which plays an important role in the control of food intake and metabolic processes. In the current study, a dose-dependent relationship was shown between a bolus intracerebroventricular rat recombinant leptin administration and reductions in food intake and body weight in Sprague-Dawley rats. During the 24 h

Effect of quantitative feed restriction on broiler performance
Tropical Animal Health and Production, 2008The objective of the current study was to determine the effect of quantitative feed restriction on the performance of broilers. A total of 270 unsexed broilers were randomly allocated to three treatments: with no feed restriction (T1), one week (T2) and two (T3) weeks of feed restriction from 22 days of age and then fed ad libitum until the age of 42 ...

Broiler breeders: feed restriction and welfare
World's Poultry Science Journal, 2002Broiler breeders are truly caught in a welfare dilemma, because the management practices that are necessary to ensure health and reproductive competence may also result in a reduction in other aspects of welfare. In this paper I review the welfare concerns associated with feed restriction of broiler breeders.
