Feed restriction and welfare in domestic birds.

open access: yes, 2006
This chapter will mainly focus on the effects of feed restriction on the welfare of the broiler breeder chicken, where most of the research on feed restriction has been carried out. The effects of short- and long-term feed restriction and food deprivation on welfare in other types of domestic birds will also be discussed where relevant.

Effectiveness of feed restriction to improve feed efficiency in finishing pigs [PDF]

open access: yes
Objective: To review the effects of feed restriction in finishing pigs on production efficiency and meat quality. Design/methodology/approach: A bibliographic review of feeding management in pigs fed ad libitum, restricted, and their combination was carried out.

Time-Restricted Feeding and Caloric Restriction: Two Feeding Regimens at the Crossroad of Metabolic and Circadian Regulation

2022
In addition to diet quality and quantity, the "timing" of food intake recently emerged as a third key parameter in nutritional and metabolic health. The link between nutrition timing and metabolic homeostasis is in part due to the regulation of daily feeding:fasting cycles and metabolic pathways by the circadian clock.

Hunger Associated with Restricted Feeding Systems

2016
Hunger and satiety are normally alternating animal states that determine feeding patterns in animals with free access to food. However, chronic hunger can result if access to food is restricted deliberately over long periods. Such systems of quantitative food restriction are widely applied during rearing and/or the dry period in some animals, such as ...

Feed restriction.

2009
AbstractIt is common practice to control the feed consumption, and therefore the energy intake, of the parents of commercial broilers and ducks but not turkeys. Genetic selection for high rates of body weight gain results in correlated increases in ovulation rate and disrupted production of eggs with sound shells suitable for hatching. Feed restriction

Restricted feeding: A nonphotic zeitgeber in the rabbit

Physiology & Behavior, 1992
The free-running circadian rhythms of five behavioral functions of the rabbit were masked by unsignalled restricted food access (RF). The rhythms were reorganized immediately, a large part of events being assembled around the end of food availability.

Circadian regulation of appetite and time restricted feeding

Physiology & Behavior, 2020
The circadian system plays an important role in the temporal regulation of metabolic processes as well as food intake to ensure energy efficiency. The 'master' clock is located within the superchiasmatic nucleus and receives input from the retina so that it can be entrained by the light:dark cycle. In turn, the master clock entrains other clocks in the

Artificial Feeding: The Least Restrictive Alternative?

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 1991
Of all the reasons that justify a decision to withhold or withdraw a feeding tube, the most basic is that it is not needed in order to nourish the patient adequately and safely. The controversy that surrounds feeding tubes decisions in the so‐called right‐to‐die context has distracted attention from this aspect of their use.

A contact eatometer suitable for feeding restriction schedules

Physiology & Behavior, 1996
We describe and test a programmable feeding system based on a contact eatometer, previously developed in our laboratory, consisting of a swinging grid beneath a hopper that is moved by the rat each time it wants to eat. This has not been connected to a solenoid that can block the movement of the grid to prevent access to the food.
