Strategies for inducing diabetes in laboratory animals: Advances from chemical, surgical, immunologic, dietary, and genetic approaches

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the principal experimental approaches used to induce diabetes in animal models. Strategies include chemical agents (streptozotocin, alloxan, dithizone, gold thioglucose), dietary interventions (high‐fat and high‐sugar diets), surgical methods (total or partial pancreatectomy), genetic models (db/db, ob/ob, Goto‐Kakizaki [GK ...

Genome-wide association of changes in swine feeding behaviour due to heat stress

open access: yesGenetics Selection Evolution, 2018
Background Heat stress has a negative impact on pork production, particularly during the grow-finish phase. As temperature increases, feeding behaviour changes in order for pigs to decrease heat production.

Spatial Cell Death and Oxidative Stress Dynamics in Gas Plasma‐Treated Tumor Tissues

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of the four experimental models to study tissue penetration and oxidation. Four tissue models were used. Human pancreatic cancer cells were grown on the chorioallantois membrane of chicken embryos and gas plasma‐treated in ovo, murine colorectal tumor tissue was gas plasma‐exposed ex vivo, murine squamous cell carcinoma cells ...

Revisiting paravertebral muscles in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) (Leporidae; Lagomorpha)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Domesticated European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have long been chosen as laboratory model organisms. Despite this, there has been no definitive study of the vertebral musculature of wild rabbits. Relevant descriptions of well‐studied veterinary model mammals (such as dogs) are generally applicable, but not appropriate for a species ...

The effect of feeding on defecation behaviour in pigs

open access: yesPhysiology & Behavior, 1992
The effect of eating on defecation behaviour was investigated in four 20-30 kg pigs. Rectal distention stimulation was performed pre- and postprandially at 10 cm from the anus with a 5 cm latex balloon. Volume was increased in steps of 10 ml up to 200 ml of air or until balloon defecation.

Morphometric analysis of postnatal lung development in the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica): An ultrastructural study

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract An ultrastructural morphometric analysis of the postnatal development of the lung in the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) has been conducted to evaluate the morphofunctional status of this poorly developed marsupial lung immediately following parturition.

An Evaluation of Paddy Rice as an Alternative Energy Source in Protein-Restricted Diets for Growing, Early-Finishing, and Late-Finishing Pigs

open access: yesAnimals
Three experiments were conducted to evaluate paddy rice as an alternative energy feedstuff in low-protein diets for pigs. In Experiment 1, a total of 400 growing pigs (20.68 ± 0.29 kg initial bodyweight), were randomly allocated four dietary treatments ...

Rethinking brachycephaly: Anatomical implications and health considerations in lagomorphs

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Brachycephaly in domestic rabbits is increasingly perceived by welfare organizations as associated with significant health complications, particularly oral pathologies. Despite this perception, comparative anatomical research into rabbit brachycephaly is limited compared to that of dogs and cats, compelling an in‐depth examination of its ...

Effects of alginate and resistant starch on feeding patterns, behaviour and performance in ad libitum-fed growing pigs

open access: yesAnimal, 2014
This study assessed the long-term effects of feeding diets containing either a gelling fibre (alginate (ALG)), or a fermentable fibre (resistant starch (RS)), or both, on feeding patterns, behaviour and growth performance of growing pigs fed ad libitum ...

Descriptive, comparative, and functional anatomy of the facial musculature in cattle (Bos taurus)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Facial expressions can provide insight into animal emotions and pain, but no standardized system for assessing the entire facial display in cattle (Bos taurus Linnaeus) exists. The Facial Action Coding System (FACS), originally developed for humans, identifies distinct facial movements based on mimetic muscles.
