Nondestructive Testing of Welded Composite Metal Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
X‐ray computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate welded steel–steel composite metal foam (CMF) joints of two density classes. It reports variation in postweld spatial void distribution and correlates it to weld‐induced changes, mechanical performance, and failure within welded CMF panels.

A Live Trap for Birds Attending a Feeding Station

open access: yesTransactions of the Kansas Academy of Science (1903-), 1976
An effective live trap for capturing nuthatches, titmice, and woodpeckers was constructed from hail screen and modified mouse traps. Over 88 percent of active sets resulted in captures. Trans. Kans. Acad. Sci., 79(1-2), 1976.

Influence of Surface Finish on the Tribological Performance of AlTiBN Coatings Deposited on Forming Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Development and evaluation of a bait station for selectively dispensing bait to invasive wild pigs

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2018
Populations of invasive wild pigs (Sus scrofa; hereafter, wild pigs) are expanding, requiring cost‐effective tools for control, and disease prevention, such as toxic or vaccine baits.

Multimodal Soft Surgical Robots Enabled by Eco‐Degradable, Sterilizable Polymers and Transient Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A compostable PGS soft surgical robot with interchangeable modules integrates transient Mo tactile and Si thermal sensors for dual feedback. The device preserves its function after clinical‐grade sterilization, demonstrates stable actuation and cardiac tissue grasping with real‐time in vivo pulsatile monitoring, and biodegrades post‐use with soil‐safe,

Transfer Printing and Reconfiguration of Soft Electronics Using Digital Microfluidics and Laser Machining

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a digital microfluidics‐based technique for transferring and reconfiguring soft nanomembranes. Laser‐machined nanothin membranes are picked up, transported, and aligned via tailored surface tension and the actuation of water droplets, enabling the development of flexible electronics, the integration of functional materials on 3D ...

Cleansing data from an electronic feeding station to improve estimation of feed efficiency

open access: yesBiosystems Engineering, 2022
Electronic feeding stations (EFS) are frequently used to automatically record feeding behaviour in pigs, but the resulting data often require cleansing. In this study, several filters were used to cleanse the data from an EFS on a commercial farm, spanning a period of 2147 days (2,709,600 records or visits, corresponding to 2748 pigs).

Enhancement of Dielectric Breakdown Strength and Recoverable Energy Density in Three‐Dimensional Heterointerfaces on BaTiO3–PbZrO3–PbTiO3 Films via Room‐Temperature Nano‐Clustering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A room‐temperature aerosol deposition process yields multiphase nano‐clustered dielectric capacitors containing discrete BaTiO3, PbZrO3, and PbTiO3 crystals. This architecture creates three‐dimensional heterointerfaces that induce interfacial charge trapping and effectively inhibit breakdown propagation.
